I realise that the 'recomended' 3k cals a day for my size/weight is too much to be eating every day. It felt like I was stuffing myself and Ive been putting on loads of fat and no noticable muscle although my lifts have increased alround which is good. I still think I dont need that many cals however so Ive cut it down 500 and taken up running again.

Thing is, I was thinking, why not jsut eat when Im hungry instead of following a daily plan every day as long as its good food.

The reason I say this is that on the days or day after when Ive done squats or deads or a good weights session then Im automatically more hungry so will prob want to eat 3k anyway. My body tells me when to eat.

On the days I was not training AS hard, I wouldnt really be jungry but would stuff the 3k of cals in nonetheless as its what I had been 'recomeded'. Im now thinking to forget (or take only as a loose guide) what the recomendations say, and trust my body more when it calls.

My question is, is my hunger an accurate indicator to go by? On the days when I dont train so hard or am not doing heavy weights I will cut my meals down as per my hunger but on those days when Im hungry after train then I will eat more as my body tells me. It seems to have been pretty accurate so far. After all this is millions of years of engineering we are tlaking about!

Seeing as Im only eating 'good stuff' oatmeal rice etc, then I think this is a better way rather than going by some abstract 'method' which wasnt tailored specifically for my bod.

Thoughts?

Hunger does not generally dictate nutrient requirement

I can curb my hunger with a mere 1500 cals, but to gain mass i can knock back 4000 and still be hungry

its all to do with the makeup of the cals and nutrients you use

Hunger may be psychological rather than physiological.

You may also not be hungry when you need to eat - i know when im bulking and ive had PWO carbs i could quite easily skip ppwo and wait a few hours before eating.

Much better to stick to the tried and tested IMO

Monitoring food intake is a funny thing. Works for some, drives others mental! When you first start a new diet or change your dietary goals like you have then it's handy to have a rough idea of how much you're eating so you know what makes you grow; what makes you fat etc... You tend to find the groove after a while and it gets easier to change things about.

Hunger isn't really a reliable indicator of what your body is in need of, nutrient wise. Hunger and satiety is influenced by loads of things- mostly unrelated to your activity that day...

mate just incase you check the thread again....

for bulking,i would say look for foods which are high in 2 of the three pro/carbs/fat,for a couple of your meals.

for instance tinned stewed steak is on average 60g protein and 20g carbs, low sat fat,you can split that into two meals, eat with potatoes/veg,you can make thise meals around 400 kcal without being massive meals.steak pies, gammon rounds/steaks etc are all imo underrated for bulking.or cook meat and add sauces

just eating when hungry wont do on a bulk unless your food is calorie dense,in which case the above can make things easier ime.

if you really have hunger issues, then use complete shakes, theres some good ones knocking about on here.

id forget the "you need x carbs bulk" thing and stick to the "ive eaten x carbs and gained x muscle" method.

you can shovel down food like its going out of fashion, but it doesnt mean youre gonna turn into coleman. you can only utilise so much.

Lyle in one of his books mentioned some studys or tests that showed people we're overestimating exercise by 50%, meanwhile underestimating food intake by 50%.
So you may end up eating a heap of calories way over your requirements or goals(if you had set them and calorie counted or whatever you like) and getting very fat.

Some people say dont count calories, count grams which is funny as to me the only difference is the number 4, 9 and 4
As for estimating portions, it takes a while of guideance to know how big 100g of chicken is, 60g pasta and 40g rice.... so youd have to weight it for the first week anyhow or steal someones "Food looking like this, weighs this much" chart.
So while your estimating, im using a scale and in under 5seconds have a accurate measurement so to me it makes sense to use scales efficiently.

As for hunger being a measurement of nutritional needs, no way - Perhaps it may of been for me before i got my body "used" to meals every 3 hours. Howver now, i can tell you the time based on my hunger and the time of my last meal... and theres no way my body suddenly needs food because 3 hours have passed. Just a case of it got used to it, so now it crys when it doesnt get its food. Conditioning, and all that jazz

agree, not saying youve got to live by numbers and stuff, but if you dont like eating rigid structured meals and struggle with hunger etc, then it pays to get clued up a little and try and make meals less frequent/smaller whilst still getting the nutrients and calories you need.

I am ahhering very strictly to the amounts I eat now as I weigh everything up on the scales, even the 50g of nuts p/d.

I think there is a nice middle ground to be found here. I will aim to shoot for 'around' 2500 cals a day, but if I havent trained say, I may not each as much whereas if I have trained hard I may have that extra bowl of cereal. I think 2500 is a better figure for me as the 3000 was making me feel stuffed all the time, 2500 is feeling alot more comfortable and the fat gain seems to have petered out.

Could be that you just don't handle carbs that well mate. Target them around your workout and have protein and fat meals when you're sedentary and you'll likely put on less fat.
