Contact Lenses - online or opticians? - 20 April 2008 19:46

Do any of you get your contact lenses online?

Any good sites or recommended brands?

Not sure if it makes a difference but I'm nearsighted (-1) and think I want to use soft lenses (monthlies or dailies).

Or do you get yours from your Opticians? If so, how much do you pay per month?

Hiya YIB. Nice to see you on here.

I use opticians as I get all the siz monthly checks thrown in for free if I pay direct debit but I still use an online supplier if I need extra. The name escapes me for a minute.

I think the cost evens itself out between the both of them but I choose opticians purely so that they can pick up any problems with my eyes and whether the prescription has changed.

PS Opticians £28.50 per month, checks free, only for 6 days a week supply though

Hi Cardifflad

Well I've been told my monthlies would cost me £18 a month. No mention about check-ups so I doubt they're included in the price. I'll have to give them a ring tomoro to see what this plan actually includes and excludes.

I'm still trying to get used to wearing them. They're a little annoying and make my eyes feel dry. Really makes me want to rub my eyes!

How long does it take you guys to get used to them?

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

It took me a few weeks to be totally comfortable with them but now (apart from the odd day) I don't even remember they are in and can whip em out and put them in easily. Getting lenses was the best thing I have ever done.

I am looking to have surgery in the future though. That would be heaven

Yeah, I want surgery as well. Need to wait until I'm 21 first though

Glasses for me are uncomfortable because my eyelashes are always up against the lenses so in the meantime I'll have to use contacts if I want to see properly.

I've had them in for about 4 hours today (second day with them) and I'm about to scratch my eyes out!

That daysoft sight (see what I did there ) looks good to me. It's recommended in the MS article too so I think I'll try ordering some if I can get my prescription this week! See how I get on with different brands. I like the sound of dailies - just didn't like the price I was quoted at the opticians

I get mine online

contacts universe

Cheap & quick delivery, cheaper than highstreet and never had a problem with them.

Also I use monthly lenses which cost me £5 a month

i use acuvue moist. have been using lenses for about 10 years now and tried most brands... without a doubt the moist are the best ones ive ever had... smokey ooms and air conditioning dont affect me much anymore.
i did order from lenses direct but they messed me about and then i found a local les place that was cheaper than online. im saving to get lasered too.

I wear monthlies and got them from specsavers, its a lensmail scheme where they send out 3 months supply by mail. Yeah, think its £15 or £18 a month, not checked the direct debit in a while. Yearly checkups were free, and compulsary, if you are on the lensmail scheme. They do take a while to get used to, try not leave them in all the time at first, maybe take out at night for a while.

Are you meant to wear them at night? I thought it was up to 10-12 hours per day only?

I don't think I was told how to use and take care of them very well to be honest.

At the moment I can only manage a few hours at a time. My eyes are still a bit red from wearing them yesterday so I'll not put them in until they're better.

YIB...

I wear monthly ones... wear them constantly for 1 month..

Then take them out and pop a new pair in..

Honestly the best ones I have used so far - been using these for 2 years solid with no issues..

Can't even feel they are there

Are those dailies?

I'll probably end up using those if I can't get used to normal ones soon. Were there any other brands you thought were better than others or similar to the acuvue moist ones?

popping them in and out ED

Around £13 per month direct debit this includes all your lenses / solutions

and eye health checks / eye sight checks

I leave mine in constantly for the month, might take them out the odd night if my eyes feel a little dry, or take them out for a quick re-hydrate in my palms, but thats very rare. At the end of the month, I take them out at night, throw away and put new pair in the next morning. I use Sauflon 7 which i buy in SpecSavers for rinsing them occasionally or storing them overnight if i take them out. Its a small bottle and neat to carry around.

I see. This is all very interesting to me

Looks like it's a trip to specsavers for me. Can I give them my prescription(s) or do I have to pay another £50 for the tests again?
