I recently carried out a 1RM attempt on my bench press. I loaded up 110kg and went for it. I stopped where I thought was about half way as I didnt think I'd be able to get it back up and on the rack if I went down much further. However my spotter says it went further than half way and it counts as a bench press. Either way I didnt think so at the time so I put on 105kg and managed that fine.

What I want to know is how far does the bar have to come down for it count? Either way I am happy with the weight but I was just curious as I've watchd some of the power lifter bench presses and they dont seem to come down as far as I'd have thought they should

Sport is different to training and powerlifting has rules on this but for safety and performance there is not urle book, the bar goes through as big a range of motion as you have handle.

All the way down so that it touches the chest - go through the full range of motion

If you watch a powerlifting bench, although the ROM is quite short in some cases due to the lifter's build, they do touch at the bottom otherwise it doesn't count as a lift

Cool cool thats what I thought, thats why I havent counted it as my 1RM I was just curious. 105kg is still a step in the right direction

I would say it does not count as its not your normal ROM you use. 105KG is as it went through your normal ROM.

It does not have to touch the chest if comparing agianst yourself.
Just be consistent with your normal style.

But if you try and post this weight in a powerlifting thread. It would not count.
also if answering a how much do you bench thread as well. Say how far it goes down if not touching your chest.

The powerlifter you watched. If it does not touch there chest. It will not pass in comp. They may have been practise partials etc.

I would say 1/2 way down is not the best way to preforming bench.

It does not have to touch your chest. But only 1/2 way down is a small ROM.

As a personal trainer they teach you a proper rep on bench pressing is when your upper arms are parallel to the floor, not when it touches your chest. Having said that I agree w/ most here. It needs to touch your chest before I would count it as a lift.

Just to add to this: a lot of powerlifters do board presses to strengthen their triceps to assist with locking out the weight, so it doesn't go down very far. Maybe this is what you saw

the bottom half would be better if you only want to do partials

I was taught to bench within an inch of your chest. I guess this avoids momentarily resting it on your chest or bouncing it back up.

Just go to your chest and touch, but don't rest it and never bounce it anyway.
Easy.

Unless you're a power lifter there is no rule saying you have to touch the chest. Just use a rom you find comfortable and that you can repeat consistently.

Agree with Ridley here - I have very long arms, if I go too low it plays havoc with shoulders and the tie muscle that crosses between chest and shoulder. Do what you can do without straining any muscles/tendons.

EDIT

This is Papa here - Mama left herself logged in...
