JohnOvManchester -> Why is the negative hurting - bench press (Apr. 21 2008 17:20:20)

Why is the bottom half of the negative hurting deep in my shoulder like front delt area but deeper?
It's when the bar is about 6" from chest but only on the negative, sometimes I have to drop the bar almost the rest of the way.

Very hard to explain... and makes doing negative out of the question.
I know it's not chest strength as I can push it and triceps can take it at the top etc.

If my spotter stays with me taking the weight at the bottom for the 1st rep, the 2nd and 3rd rep are actually easier (the pain is still there but a bit less in the 2nd rep and almost gone in the 3rd)
Don't need anyone touching the bar going up or down but only AFTER they have helped me on the way down with the 1st/2nd one.

Is it my rotator cuff?

It's annoying me as I want to do some singles - did 120kg today pushing but not for the negative, then by the time I got to my 3rd/4th rep my strength had gone so I needed help pushing it but was able to do the negative virtually pain free.

I had this exact problem not so long ago John - i put it down to an RC problem which i think was caused by behind the neck pressing (this movement itself caused no pain but it seemed to carry over to benching).

I knocked training on the head for 2 weeks and did some rehab work on my 'cuffs and they've come back pretty much pain free now.

Have a read of this;

I think it probably is rotator cuff

But pressing behind the neck is actually helping sort out some past shoulder problems, I don't go heavy but going through the motion seems to strech is and free it up a bit.

Ak_88 -> RE: Why is the negative hurting - bench press (Apr. 21 2008 17:43:05)

Like myself - the movement itself caused my zero problems but its a movement known to put stress on the internal rotators of the RC (subscapularis i think in this case - the one that inserts into the front of the shoulder joint)

Vertical pressing movements caused me no problems so i think this reinforced it was an RC problem.

Try knocking BTN pressing on the head if you're doing it and add in some rehab stuff and see how it feels in a few weeks.

no mate, it's not that
I have done with and without and I'm better off with

the bench problem is the same with or without

are you doing any RC stuff though?

JohnOvManchester -> RE: Why is the negative hurting - bench press (Apr. 22 2008 15:04:32)

No, nothing specific... if it is RC then it's internal rotation

R3261 -> RE: Why is the negative hurting - bench press (Apr. 22 2008 16:23:35)

i'd recommend taking a break

sounds like an impingement which will need to be looked at

TBH flat-bench has always give me shoulder probs,i just do inclines now no problems at all.

had that before it's not a sharper pain as that it's a pulling burning... but not quite a tearing type pain

Nine pack and John H both say don't do flat bench

I just like it, it's a good measure of where you are up to but have to admit it only seems to cause me problems

it affects a lot of people that way,try just raising the incline to the first hole,so its not that high.

I agree, I injured myself the 1st time I ever tried flat bench presses (about a year and a 1/2 ago) and tried 1 recently as everyone was making fun of my lack of bench pressing skills. I completely screwed up my right shoulder from it.

I've alwyas seen flat bench press as the ego press. I avoid it like the plague.
