jango -> Treadmill vs Roadwork? (Apr. 21 2008 20:51:34)

After I do my cardio on the treadmill at the gym, i'm usually left sweating and breathing quite heavily.

However, after I take a run in my local park at around the same pace and for the same time, I am left dripping with sweat and my lungs feel as though they've been given a real workout. I have never felt this sensation in my lungs when running at a similar pace and for a similar time on the treadmill.

I cannot explain why this is, but these experiences have made me come to the conclusion that treadmills are a bit crap, and that running in the real world is a lot more beneficial for conditioning.

on the road you have to push of more,on a treadmill you are basicly just lifting your legs forward and the floor is moving under you, raise the incline slightly, both are good but the road is defo harder.

Cant really compare the two.
Road running is far better in terms of actual fitness, I used to run on a treadmill and thought I was doing great, then one day went for a run on the road and after 3 minutes I was hanging out.
So if you want to be fit then road running is the better one.

You cannot replicate road running on the treadmill. However, the best you can do, is put the gradient up to between 1.5 and 3 which at least will bear some comparison to the ups and downs on a road. Having just done a half marathon with little or no roadwork, I have come to the conclusion that you cannot beat pounding the pavements!

Thank you all for confirming my suspicions.

From here on in, I declare my fitness regime to be a treadmill free zone.[:D]

road all the way

I dont tend to go flat out on a treadmill for the fact in my gym (fitness first) people look at you like a nutter when your speed is set at 20 and your red as beetroot drippin with sweat poundin the treadmill away.

Road all the way for me first thing in the morning at 6 when no chav scum are around.

Road for me, well off road is even better, although I do know of a female runner in the Notts area, cant recall her name, who used to do virtually all her training on a treadmill then turn up at the Robin Hood Marathon and win

so works for some.

Not for me, my treadmill is getting used less and less these days

BIGT -> RE: Treadmill vs Roadwork? (May 6 2008 13:37:08)

Road for me too and at 6 when there is no one out to nick my ipod;) As has been said if you set the incline it does mimick road work more.

Incredible Bulk -> RE: Treadmill vs Roadwork? (May 6 2008 14:34:25)

Road for fitness
Treadmill for steady state

IMO

the treadmill is great for setting a pace but you cannot comapre the two when it comes to fitness. [:)]
The guy who runs 5 miles on the road/track is going to be fitter than the guy who runs the same distance but on the treadmill
