I know you can't beat solid foods and I usually get 300g + proetein/day from solid foods and only have a protein shake on waking and after workout.

So just hyperthetically speaking has anyone wondered what sort of progress you would make on just whey as a protein source.

I am just trying to figure out how good a protein source it really is.

Obviously it is fast acting so maybe a shake an hour?

Interested to hear peoples opinions.

Judging whey by biological value and protein digestibility corrected amino acid scoring it's ace, but as you say because it's partially digested you need to have a regular intake for it to be effective or slow it down in some way- usually by having it with fats and fibre. There's a study where folk were fed either:

30g whey in one go;
43g casein in one go;
or 2.3g whey every 20 mins
(they were all given identical amounts of the amino acid leucine as well)
they measured their protein deposition by taking a note of leucine balance a while after they'd consumed the pro- whey came out the fastest by a long shot, casein was slower and delayed protein breakdown much longer, whey every 20 mins mimicked the slower digesting pro- both methods were much better at improving protein balance than the 1 shot of whey

I can't find you any data sorry, but I'm relatively sure that very frequent hyperaminoacidemia will result in poor overall protein synthesis, compared to regualrily varying amino profiles and absorptions. If anyone has any information on this (or dispell it as myth), I'd be very greatful.

I've got a few fancy protein studies on my comp but they're not available online; the one ref'd above shows protein synthesis is 4 times greater with casein and 9 times greater with repeated doeses of whey compared to the single dose of whey... but what sort of weirdo sits and eats protein powder by itself?!
