xweighted -> Smith machine calf raises? (Apr. 21 2008 22:13:11)

I know the smith is generally restrictive but as a huge amount of range of motion is not required for this exercise except up and down, who rates these as a good calf exercise?

If not, any other sugestions?

Thanks

If I had access to a smith machine, I'd probably do them that way

Shicky -> RE: Smith machine calf raises? (Apr. 21 2008 23:25:10)

Was my favourite exercise, packed on great muscle and strength in mine through this - used a small platform, had my heels off it so i'd get a get a full ROM. Miss it so much :( crappy seated calf raise

Thanks shicky.

i never thought to use a platform.

As you say this would give a much greater range of motion.

Will definatily give it a try!

I rate them massively. You get a very good range and your in a stable position allowing you to fully focus on the calf. I love the burn i get off doing this excercise! [:D]

smith machines are good for calves.

i used this method before for my calves

Incredible Bulk -> RE: Smith machine calf raises? (Apr. 24 2008 12:49:52)

i used to pinch a step from the aerobics area and use it as a platform for calf raises on the smith.
to stop the bar digging into the legs i placed a 10 kg thin plate across the thighs too

love this set up

muscl3s -> RE: Smith machine calf raises? (Apr. 24 2008 15:18:04)

the smith machines in my gym seem to stick when the direction of motion is changed (when the weight is more than about 100kg). so i dont use them

We have a machine with pads, the best machines are the seated ones IMHO.

Smith would be OK for calf raises, get a coupe of plates and put them one one another to get a strech.

War Lord -> RE: Smith machine calf raises? (Apr. 24 2008 18:12:03)

I like them for standing calf raises, wouldn't touch them for squats mind.

The seated machines that rest on your knee's?

JohnOvManchester -> RE: Smith machine calf raises? (Apr. 24 2008 18:19:43)

Yeah, those are my favorite... you have your toes on a metal platform and pads on top of your knee's

The thing I don't like about the standing ones is the compresion through your body, you can feel it's a bit of a softer move like some of the force is absorbed... you don't get taht with the seated ones.
