Hi all,

My situation is that i am currently on a bulk and feeling really tired after most meals. Also first thing in the morning i always seem to have a really bad upset stomach right after i have breakfast and it is starting to really get on my mind. I have tried switching things around and nothing seems to work. I cant work out whether it could be my evening meals that are causing it or my breakfast. My breakfast seems to act like a trigger and once i have finished eating i am more or less straight on the long drop! :(....

Can anyone help me with this situation or does anyone have any good articles to read about recogniseing if you are carb sensitive?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks very much :)

Hello. When did you start having a dodgy gut?
What carbs are you eating?
It would help if you could post up a typical day's eating, a rough guide will do

Hi fraser,

Well i starting getting a dodgy stomach when i started bulking and generally upping my intake of food.

Carbs i get from bread, rice, potatoes and pasta mainly

Here is a typical days bulk for me,

8:00 am -Meal 1 - 1 bowl of oats or Wheatabix , 2 slice of granary bread, 3 whole eggs, semi-skimmed milk, Fish oil/Flaxseed tabs & 1 multivitamin tab, whey protein shake in water

11:00 - Meal 2 - 100g rice/Jacket potato , 150g chicken/ steak or can of tuna, veg, e.g. broccoli, mixed veg or salad

14:00 - Meal 3 - (SAME AS MEAL 2)

15.30 - 1 scoop of creatine in water, A handfull of mixed nuts

16:00 - Train

17.15 - Whey protein shake + dextrose

18:00 - Meal 4 - (SAME AS MEAL 2, 3, 4)

21:00 - 1 Bowl of oats or wheatabix and whey shake

22.30 - cottage cheese with riveta.

The whey protein i take is called Gold standard 100% Whey, it is an isolate and has around 24g of protein per serving.

I did a little experiment this morning to see how my stomach reacts to the whey shake first thing and pritty much as soon as i drunk it i started to get a dodgy stomach. I also left out last nights shake to see if that would have any effect but still on the long drop first thing lol :(

I am 6ft 1 and weigh around 210lb.

Could it be that i am not eating enough, or to much?

Thanks

I am also not taking creatine at the moment coz i read somewhere that mono can cause an upset stomach, we shall see.

Feeling tired after meals isn't uncommon but it's probably connected to blood glucose drops- you may be carb sensitive, could be other factors. Did you have any of the symptoms before bulking?

How quickly did you increase your food intake- did you suddenly up cals by a large amount? This itself could cause problems with digestion.

Try lowering your carb portions to around 40-50g per meal and keep them very unrefined- either brown basmati rice, hot sweet potato or oatmeal. If you want to replace those cals then increase your healthy fat intake with fish, nuts and seeds, or supplements. I've seen a study where consuming o3 fats a wee while before a meal reduced the insulin spikes of the meal- think this was used with diabetes sufferers especially in the morning before breakfast where insulin can be most sensitive

If you are prone to blood sugar problems then you definitely won't need dextrose PWO- stick to the above carbs even at this time.

Judging by your whey experiment you should try leaving that out for a few weeks and see if your gut problems clear up. Have you had problems digesting dairy before?

I'll try and get a cleverclog to look into this thread, i'm no expert mate!

Hey fraser,

when i was younger before i started hitting the weights and eating big, if i didnt eat for a while then i would feel tired as well and my blood sugars were low.Last night i got this problem where i felt like i had no energy what so ever just becasue i didnt eat from 17.30 untill 21.00, just over three hours.
When i started bulking i firstly just eat as much as i could and added quite alot of unwanted fat. So i sorted out my diet and have pritty much kept with it for some time, changing things round for variety. I am really not sure if it could be they whey that is doing it becasue i have tried many different whey sups and i still have the same problem, some worse than others. In terms of digesting dairy, that hasnt been a problem at anytime in my life, always digests well.

I am now gonna try and balance my meals through the day into smaller portions of protein/carbs and protein/fat and stick with unrefined carbs and see if this makes any difference.

drop some carbs and add in healthy fats as your diet is very low on them

Big meal (especially one containing high-GL carbs) = big insulin spike = drowsiness.
Big meal = some undigested food reaching colon = discomfort/gas/diarrhoea.
If your weight is increasing too rapidly (>1lb/week), you're eating too much.
If your weight is increasing too slowly (<0.25lb/week), you're not eating enough.

By the long drop - i am guessing you go to the loo.
if so then actually this is quite normal - food entering the stomach can be a trigger to clear out the other end.

if you feel icky then quite simply the volume of food, or even the temperature of it - If I drink cold milk in the morning on an empty stomach it literally bounces (its back and out inside a minute) - and anything really cold makes a good attempt at the same trick.

I would look at dividing up your meal or taking things slowly with warm milk, not cold water - and leaving the capsules of oil till another meal.

feeling tired after meals is usually an indication that the volume was high, and is common with with fatty meals, and if the carbs are quickly digested - my suggestion is smaller portions more often, and make sure that protein is in every meal - you need it and it slows digestion when its from solid food (not a whey shake)

thats a couple of places to start

Hey guys,

Thanks very much for all the info, i definitely think my portion sizes are to high then especially in carbs. I have decided to leave out my whey isolate shakes this week and see whether this has any effect on my situation. I will also cut down the amount of food i have with each meal and maybe cut a meal all together as may be having a little bit to much.

Also, when talking about body weight and how many grams of protein you should eat per pound of your body weight. Is that your lean mass or your total body weight?

And one last question. As i am going to leave out my whey shakes for a week, what would be a good replacement for my pwo meal before i eat my ppwo? Would a banana be ok or do i need something else that is quick release?

Thanks for all your help so far

good plan about dropping the shakes bro- let us know how it goes and we can give you more help.

Generally when people refer to g/pro per bodyweight they are rwferring to lean body mass but unless you're massively overweight then it won't make much of a difference overall..

For your PWO meal just eat a source of low fat protein- tuna, chicken breast etc and some carbs as suggested above- basically the only rule is MINIMISE FAT PWO- otherwise get a sufficient calorie intake to recover and'll be ok

Cut down my portion size for breakfast this morning and had around 60g oats and 3 eggs. Was going well untill i had a glass of cold water which i could feel making my stomach turn. So will change that tomorrow morning.

Also i left out the whey last night and had my last meal around 21.00 which was 1 chicken breast and two table spoons of peanut butter. As i am not having any whey shakes do u think it would be ok to have my last meal at 21.00 and not get anything in right before bed?

I said i would let you guys no how its going so here goes,

Ok so i have changed a few things around in my diet to try and get to this bottom of this. I am now eating brown rice in stead of white and sweet potatoes instead of j-ps. Also i have left out my Whey isolate shakes to see if that makes any difference at all. I have also cut my portion sizes down and try to split my meals into protein/carbs and protein/fat.

I have noticed better energy levels, i dont feel as tired as i did before which is a good thing. My dodgy stomach is a little better but still not 100%.
I also went to the doctor to see if i was Diabetic but there was no signs of glucose in my pee and my blood was good. So i asked them what could be going on and they basically gave me a lecture about a bodybuilders diet and not to take whey protein and creatine as they are bad for you in the long run! lol.

Anyway, i am gonna keep playing around with my diet and try to get to the bottom of this. So far i have learned portion sizes cant be to big or i wont digest them properly and will feed really tired. Also some foods make a difference to my dodgy stomach and some dont.

What i am not to sure on at the moment is whether whey protein is having some effect on me.

Also i have left out my last meal before bed at around 22.30 and my last meal is around 21.00 and will consist of 1 chicken breast and two table spoons of peanut butter. Would this be ok to carry me through till morning or is it to big of a gap?

Cheers
