Hi Ladies. First off, James asked me to let you ladies, and your forum moderator, know that he has given me permission to introduce myself and place this post. Well done James on being a proactive open minded guy!! Thanks.

My name is Suzie and I live in New Zealand. I have recently found your site and I really wanted to reach out to you all. I know you all have worked very hard in learning about your body, educating yourself and doing all you can to be healthy. So I wanted to encourage you to also be aware of your breast health.

Now girls, before you go rolling your eyes, let me explain. About 3 years ago, my good friend became sick with breast cancer. I saw first hand the terrible roller coaster of emotions and "stuff" she had to deal with. All I could do at the time other than try to be a good friend, was to knit pretty scarfs to donoate to the Cancer Societies. I thought women having a 'blue' day or feeling unattractive, could wear one of my scarves and hopefully feel alittle better. Now...I cant knit in a straight line, so every stitch required effort! However I soon got quicker, and didnt lose as many stitches, and gathered quite a pile to give away. It was an outlet for the stress I felt with watching my friend lose her hair, feel so ill, become so weak, and body so vulnerable.

To cut a long story short, eventually she started to recover, gain strength, had her hair grow back and get more energy. Its taken a long time. Every time she has an ache, she starts to worry and wonder if her cancer is back. My dear friend was one of those women who did not check her breasts on a regular basis. There seemed to be a time where women thought the occassional annual check up from your Dr and/or a mammogram would be enough.

So here is where I come in ladies. It is not enough. Do not put your life at risk by not doing all you can against this terrible breast disease. You owe it to yourself to get into a regular habit and check your breasts. No one, other than your partner, will know your breasts as well as you do. You need to be the one to do breast self exam. If you know how your breasts feel and are familiar with them, you will notice changes earlier. That means you can get on and get the help you need sooner. Early detection is key.

If you have periods, you need to check your breasts the week after your period. This means your breasts will not be as painful and tender, due to hormones, and any hormonal lumps should have gone. If you dont get a period, just pick a day of the month that is easy to remember, and do it the same time each month.

Do the entire breast in a grid pattern so as not to leave any part of the breast unexamined. This includes under your breast, the sides of your breast, above your breast, going into the middle of the chest area, as well as the tissue leading up to your armpit and then the armpit itself. You use the pads of your fingers moving in a circular motion.

It will feel abit weird at first. I certainly felt clumbsy. I pulled the curtains and took the phone off the hook so I could concentrate. Now I am alot faster! I guess at the end of the day, I wanted to do all I could so I wasnt one of the women who found breast lumps at a late stage. If I am going to be one of the unlucky women who have breast cancer, I want to find my lump as small as possible! Doing regular breast exam helps me be proactive in my breast health.

So will you?? Will you please start checking your breasts on a regular basis and tell all the females in your life the same. This includes the young adults in your life too. Sowing the seeds of thought about breast health to young women, can only be a good thing and encourage them. I mean why wait till you are 40!!

By the way, you might want to tell the men in your life that they can get male breast cancer too. True!

If you wish to learn more about the details of breast examination or other breast information, please check out my website at www.early-detection-for-breast-cancer.com.

Thanks Ladies for your time. Wishing you the best of health,

Suzie

Suzie, I'm so pleased for your friend and how wonderful of you to now do this. I am going to post a link to this in the general section so the guys who don't venture into here see this, as you say it's important that they're aware of it too and maybe they can pass the link onto their loved ones too.

Thank you

I think people sometimes forget that men can get Breast Cancer also.

Thanks for the article Suzy. I may suggest some examining to my other half tonight!

Very good & informative post, thanks Suzie!

I do check monthly, as I thought I had a lump about 6 years ago & then went for a scan which was clear...
