Hi folks, I need some quick advice. I am using a wireless laptop with a vista home operating system and every time I try to download something my wireless connection drops and I have to restart my laptop.

This has only started happening in the last couple of days and I do not have a clue what is up with it. I googled the problem and loads of folk seem to have this issue with vista.

I do not think it is hardware as when I restart the laptop everything is working again and also I can surf no problem the issue only occurs when I try to download.

Can anyone advice.

'It' knows you are downloading dirty things and so terminates your connection

First thing i would try is downloading new firmware for your router, some routers fail under heavy traffic flow.

When you say downloading, do you mean that "T" word that isn't liked on here??

If so, play around with your settings to improve stability - less total connections, and capping U/L speeds seems to stop mine from giong do-lally as often. XP though...

Possible Problems:-

(1) Vista. Its ****e, frankly. And will be for another couple of years.

(2) Missing or faulty Filter somewhere in the house. Try disconnecting all other phones in the house, and see if it still happens. if it doesnt, reconnect one by one until it does and isolate the dodgy filter that way.

(3) Interference of wireless signal, usually caused by materials in the walls, or electrical equipment nearby.

(4) Dodgy Service Provider giving you a duff connection, or throttling your connection. More likely if you are with somebody like Virgin, AOL, Sky or one of the silly-cheap ones thrown in with other services.

(5) Faulty modem/router.

(6) Spyware/Virus interference.

Your best bet, take it to your local decent computer shop (privately owned, not bloody PC World) and ask them to look it over for you. Then can test for everything except a duff connnection.

Just advice based on extensive experience. Feel free to ignore.
