Xian -> The "Taper" (Apr. 22 2008 16:29:22)

Following a large amount of time spent working with uk swimmers and uk coaches on the planning of swimming training programmes.

I have discovered the "taper" of which is simple terms is a reduced work load before comps for these swimmers ready for them to be able to peak. so instead of doing 60,000m per week to say 30,000 dependant on the stroke and such stuff.

After discussions with guys who train, many laughed of the thought of a taper and said "no way, no breaks for me" and "That wouldn't work in weightlifting" , "Are you joking? i'd lose all my strength" which to me are not very strong arguments and quite pointless statements.

This site has people who compete right at BB events? Do you guys taper beforehand or just rest?

I was just thinking about training for 4 weeks then having a week slight break still work just lower intensity and then work hard the following week.

Does anyone do this? as i'd be very interested to see the results.

I think alot here take a week off after 6-8 week periods in the gym mate, I suaully go back feeling stronger and with a better mindset.....quite normal I thought!?

powerlifters/strength competitors do this sort of thing.

bb'ing is for aesthetics though not functionality/performance.

i agree its good to take a week off, i have a full week off every 8-10 weeks.

Is this a full week off training? or reduced amount of workload?

Do you compete?

Right ok , that kinda makes sense i guess. [&:] i would have thought a good bb could lift massive amounts as they are Massive! Ha

Does anyone reduce training every fourth week? really short mesocycles?

JBRSS -> RE: The "Taper" (Apr. 22 2008 16:43:12)

Which uk swimmers have you worked with Xian?

In terms of swimming i didnt use to have a long taper, three days easy training coming down from moderate to hard work and it wasnt about the meterage but the intensity of training

I know of many, both here and in the gym that take the full week off, tho somtimes I will miss a week of deadlifting or squats to give myself a rest but continue with the rest of my routine.

At the university i go to, our swimming lecturer is a uk coach Glenn Cook. He showed us his uk swimmers programmes, and some of the uk tri team, mostly kids between 12-16 all looking very good prob only 1 -2 will make it though [:(] but even so quite intresting.

Thats intresting , you heard of maglisho? he has written a very good book about swimming i can to the conclusion that overal milege needed to be dropped with the same amount of endurance / anerobic / and recovery.

JBRSS -> RE: The "Taper" (Apr. 22 2008 17:01:44)

No i havent heard of Maglisho. I did drop the meterage from 60,000m in 8/9 sessions to about an average of 5000m a session doing maybe 7 or 8 sessions but i liked doing the metres still before but changing the training i would do completely.

For instance

Main set during hard training for me - 200m Max pace on 3 mins
150 MAX pace on 2.30
100 MAX pace on 2
50 MAX pace on 1
100 Easy on 2 mins X 4 All No.1 stroke, mine was fly
Week leading to competition

4 x 50 MAX broken swim 10 rest

x 2

25 sprints from dives

This was to sharpen up, there would then be a lot of steady swimming just to keep the fitness there

R3261 -> RE: The "Taper" (Apr. 22 2008 17:03:53)

i take a full weeek off every 10-12 weeks or so

if you're training / rest is adequate not at all neccessary tho

Xian -> RE: The "Taper" (Apr. 22 2008 17:05:29)

Nice anerobic workout their [:o] makes me feel sick....

Do you find when you train in the gym your shoulders get massive quickly? a mate of mine ex swimmer can't train em , as they get so big so quickly

JBRSS -> RE: The "Taper" (Apr. 22 2008 17:07:39)

Lol made me feel sick too. Didnt train my shoulders too much when i swam but when i finished they did yes and they were big already without much training

hmmm, thats a very interesting point. I may try every 4th week a slight decrease in intensity. I Think genetics pay a massive role in this though. I just think that a week of increased rest and decresed intensity will rapidly help performance in bb or any sport,
