max amount of meals a day??
-
22 April 2008 17:01
im not going to ask if i can eat big meals every hour coz thats stupid my questions is this some days i get up really early and have to work till really late ie 9am-4am so can get loads of meals in, is there a limit to the amount of meals i should be having or should i be eating every 3 hours as normal?? i know that the small amounts of sleep have a negative effect on building muscle as im not getting enough rest but i make sure i dont do any workout or excersizes on the 2 days i workd late.
quick, get into the chopper!!!

I doubt if there's a right or wrong answer to this. Personally I would try my best to keep on fuelling up with small meals every 3 hours if I had to work a 19 hour stretch - but I guess it would depend on the work being undertaken and a persons unique metabolism. All in all, my vote would be to eat rather than not for any period of the 19/20 hours!
Do or Do Not...there is no Try!

I've read that research has proven that it can be beneficial to eat more meals a day, even up to as many as 15. however. i do believe that tot kcal was the same, its just how much your choose to eat per meal.

Provide a link to the research please. Meal frequency makes no difference whatsoever to progress, whether bulking or cutting. It only makes a difference to discomfort if bulking, or appetite if cutting. See http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/m_2625404/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#2625404

15 meals a day is not good for your teeth, that's for certain...

On a high-carb diet maybe, but a low-carb diet results in virtually zero plaque buildup.

On a low-carb diet, there's only ~2 portions of fruit a day (which can be eaten at the same time) so there's not much chance for acid attacks.

Lyle McDonald Somewhat of topic but he sent me his 'Protein book' a few weeks ago and it an excellent text on protein consumption for athletes. I can highly recomend it.

This is something Jess harps on at me all the time about (she's a dental nurse), so figure it can't be that far off. There are foods other than fruits that are acidic - I think this list actually refers to the food being acidic rather than acid forming, TBH it's been one of those days!!! It was something I read in a norwegian fitness magazine probably years ago now, and it was a test that was done to show effects of it. Don't remember all the details either. I'll keep it in mind for next time. However, done some research now and I found a site that might explain the effects of nibbling 17 meals per day vs 3 meal per day. The second one shows pro's and con's in a bit more understandable language: http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/321/14/929 http://bestlowcarbs.com/article1071.html

Those foods are "acid-forming", not acidic. Sugar is in the list and it's neither acid nor alkaline.

Thanks for that. The advantages are all to do with serum lipids and blood glucose control, which I accept. There was no difference in metabolic rate between gorging and nibbling, which is what the thread http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/m_2625404/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#2625404 was all about.
