I have started doing boxing more than Muay Thai lately and the sparring is a lot harder. Last night my head was splitting when I went to bed after 7 rounds of sparring. A few lads wear headguards, I have never owned or wore one, do they make much difference in your opinion? do you think it makes it safer? Cant be good for you taking good punches to the head 3-4 nights per week.

I used to spar 4 times a week, sometimes 5 in boxing and it did me more damage than good mate. Had problems with my nose which ****ed me about for ages and alot of headaches and ringing in the ears. I wouldnt do more than 2/3 a week now and focus of quality rather than quantity. I used to wear a headguard, but that was more to do with trying to avoid cuts from clash of heads and cheap shots than safety, but I think it does help a little bit

Think I will buy one, if I am going to fight in boxing I will need to wear one while I am amatuer, better getting used to it, and probably safer, my left ear is sore and swollen today, and my head felt like a stinking hangover last night.

buy a decent one, its your noggin after all will you go for a closed face (pads for the cheeks) or open face (basic forehead and sides)? try it on before you buy if you can... i wore a cheap one in the boxing gym once and it felt like my head was in a vice

its medically proven that they dont protect the skull at all , maybe they can reduce eye injuries but thats about it . They make the target bigger and novice boxers seem to think they are invincible when they wear one ( walking into shots throwing windmills ) I only wear one in sparring due to 1 reason .... i have to wear one in competition so why not get used to it .

never worn one, never will! gives a false sense of protection and impairs vision imo

I'd get one of those that have the padding coming over the cheek area as well. I went and bought one without and Murphy's law meant I got whacked in that spot and got swelling. I haven't sparred in a good while though.

i didnt wear one when i did a (little) bit of sparring/training my mate made the comment about restricted viewing when he tried one out but he didnt want to fight (just sparr and get in shape) so it wasnt really applicable i did take a few too many temple digs for my own good though

In a nutshell he needs an AIBA approved one..be it top ten or Adidas..think Everlast might be approved as well of the top of my head..well both our young'ens are Everlast anyway and both are badged...if your going to fight as an amateur you have to wear an approved one..so spar in what you have to wear!!.

Well said. Maybe wear one then ask your sparring partner not to throw hooks or uppercuts.

Best to wear one mate, been sparring for years and its saved me getting the ears and the nose done on countless occasions, i wear the full face one which is a real c"*t as it cuts down your vision, especially kicks , sometimes you dont see them coming but theres one for everybody .
