I use bulkpowders/myprotein milk protein concentrate in smoothies once or twice a day at no particular time. Powders aren't strictly necessary but they are very convenient. Many people use whey protein after a workout but it makes no difference IME.

Buy some fine oats from bp/mp
Buy an unflavoured protein power
Buy a blender
Experiment with a few recipes

It's a great way to consume protein and fruit/veg.

Using fruits, yoghurt etc in a blender is more appetising than a shake imo but some like to use a flavoured protein powder instead in a shaker. Chose whichever suits you.

Supps,

Perhaps beta alanine &/or citruline malate or neither. Blender, protein and oats first imo.

your learn alot in the articles, i disagree with puzzle i believe in having a protein shake straight after training, your muscles are damaged, blood flowing through them like bad, you need protein and that, so it quick and easy and best time to have it

Yeah i use Garnell High perf whey choc very nice in water or milk, but ive tried a sample of Boditronics Rich choc and its seems nicer and sweeter so im going to buy some of that after ive finished my garnell protein.

Yeah as beefycool has said protein is essential after your workout, and throw another shake in throughout the day to get your protein intake up.

You need 1gram of protein per 1lb bodyweight btw mate, but you prob already know that lol

What makes you say that whey protein after a workout is essential?

easiest quickest way straight after a workout, dont think most people fancy a meal like 15mins after hard session

Does the body at that time necessarily have insufficient protein?

This period, known as the golden hour, is when the muscles absorb the most nutrients and when glycogen, an energy reserve in your muscles, is replaced most efficiently. The actual composition of the post-workout meal is a matter of some debate. For optimal glycogen replacement, most people recommend carbohydrates, but a certain amount of protein (at least 10 percent of the meal) is needed for muscle repair and growth.

There may well be a hour of improved nutrient uptake, but by how much is what's important.

Improved glycogen uptake.. is that important for those not working out a few hours later?

Also important, as I said before... is the body necessarily low in protein at this time?

its been said you need glycogen after the gym, to carry on with normal day to day life,
dont know about you but i cant have a shower after the gym, find it hard to drive back from the gym. gone so weak, because i put all the effort in at the gym,
you should be having protein every 3 hours, so if you have protein 1.30-2hrs before the gym, work out for a hour, thats 3 hours so your body will be low on protein.
im just quoting whats in all the text books, reference sites and body building sites.

I have an oat and milk protein drink before and a little during my workout, and if there's any left I'll have it at the end. Within 30 minutes of finishing my workout, I eat my evening meal.
