Ever considered doing a bit of travelling mate?

Although we've all heard the cliche it could help to break you out your rut (your situation mirrors mine in a'lot of ways) by going at a different pace of life, trying a few different things etc. I know you've had some financial troubles, but it can be done cheaply if you have some character.

I'm likely heading out to Australia/NZ at the end of summer. What's gonna happen?...**** knows, but at least it better than sat around lamenting.

Not something I've ever put much thought into. Probably something I should do while I'm young enough, but there isn't that huge appeal to me. Part of my would love to emmigrate, but I would probably be in the same boat doing that, minus friends and family.

How long are you planning on travelling for?

Aye, if you're a family type person, then you might suffer a little. However if you've only lived in the north-west all ya life and havent experienced much else(not implying that you are naive or a small town type of lad personally, as it sounds like you have a brain on those shoulders), then time spent in a new enviroment might rejuvenate your spirit somewhat.

Dunno how long exactly might be a week, might be forvever. I need to get out there first lol. I'll just see how I get on.

I've got a national diploma in mechanical engineering but cant do anything with it other than go to uni. Im working at jcb at the moment, the pay is ok but im capable of so much more.

Might go and do either plumbing or sparking course and then try and get on somewhere with a decent local firm even then the money will be ****e unless you run your own business or do contract work.

Not that much a family person to be honest. See the folks once every 2-3 weeks but thats about it! I guess I just feel comfortable with the familiarity round here and having my little comforts nearby. I'm not well travelled at all, been around the UK a fair bit but never left the county apart from a coach-ride battlefield tour to France with school when I was about 14!

Well then, time spent away from your comfort zone might change your outlook. There's a fine line between stability and stagnation.

This isn't by choice, more by circumstance. As a kid, my parents were very poor and a holiday abroad simply wasn't even an option. Early teens I was saving up to drive rather than saving up for lads holidays, 20's, paying off so many different things and always "getting straight to do it next year instead". Also mroe interested in moving out than going on holiday too. Hoping to go this year!

Well said and more than likely true. Considered a move further north up to Newcastle and starting afresh up there, but again, always thinking about a job really and what I'd do when I got there!

Back on topic slightly.

I think it's a case of that you havent found you're passion in life yet Rob.

Dont beat yourself about this. I dont know anyone in their 20's who has. In fact when I think about it, the lads who I at one time thought are on the right track are simply the boring corporate types. Merely preparing themselves for 20 years of arse-kissing up the corporate ladder via dodgy office cubicle meetings etc.

You're still a young man, just keep trying new things, keep an open mind and dont pigeon yourself into any one enviroment, ideal, way etc.

This is something I'm only just realising myself at 21. And i'm not there yet, but we have to keep on trying.

Indeed. The things I do have a passion for are atypical "boy" things that are pretty much impossible to get into: superstar Djing, racing driver, that sort of thing! I'd be a great racing-driver too! LOL

I'm still having a quarter-life crisis I guess. I just want to have a bit of money so that I can do the things I enjoy and not constantly have to worry about things. A bit of stability and a clearer view of the future. Perhaps I'm asking too much.

Last time I checked those are still career options.

Okay with the dj'ing you might not be able to jump in with your own set at global gathering etc. But surely you might persuade a promoter at a local club to give you an hour slot early on a fri, sat night?

Regards to the racing driver. Okay maybe not F1 but i'm sure car companies need test drivers etc.

Dont be afriad to pursue these things, if that's what really get's you up in the morning.

DJing is all about who you know really, ragardless of how good you are. Doubt I'll ever follow that up now.

Racing would be a dream come true for me, though it must be an unbelievably competitive industry.

I'll have to sleep on it. I've got the day off work tomorrow to view a flat and see the housing benefit people to see what I'm entitled to, hopefully put things in a new perspective for me.

Thanks for your help!
