alright guys when i free weight bench press i can bench 70kg, but due to the stands being where i need to put my hands i've been using the smith.

but i can only manage 50kg on the smith how come this occurs is it due to the resistance from the bars its attached to???

thanks for replies

Pez

On all machines I just look at the weight like an indication. I mean, leg press I can do 150kg for 20+ reps, but squats i'm on about 130-140 for 6. With all the bearings and such the actual resistance is difficult to measure. ALso, could be your position. On leg curl I used to struggle to do 60kg, then i realised my knew wasn't in the right place, moved the seat forward and now I can do 100kg. If it burns, then I figure it's going well.

Have a look at this video.

http://thefitshow.com/week3/milos_chest_med.htm

I found it interesting that he mentioned that machines are designed to isolate the specific muscle you are trying to use. When you free weight bench press, other musles(triceps, lats) tend to be involved whereas machines are designed to use just the muscle you are intereted in.

When training a couple of years ago i was benching 80kg but with 2 X 40kg dumbbells. When i moved to the Barbell i could barely lift 60kg!!

I think alot of it is todo with what your body gets used to pushing.

a lot of smith machines are different and all are different to a free bar, therefore its like comparing apples and pears
