I am two years into a degree and have found it really hard to keep up. I never really went to school because i hated it. I found out this week i am dyslexic (not sure that is correct lol) and i am sure this is partly why i hated school. I have extra lessons which i pay for. I have spent a fortune on books and computer eqipment to help me.

I do run a business and travel abroad working but the degree itself has been overwhelming for me.

If you have done one what was it and how did you find it????

you can get extra time if you're dyslexic. just get an educationl pyschologist to test you, and write proof.

anything up to 25% extra in exam time.

not sure i am unlucky i chose to do it, just found it hard. I have proof from the phsychologist who tested me, it also looks like i could get £2500 grant to help out with computer stuff and books.

Anybody else??

I am in my final year of my degree. I am studying Sport and Exercise Science, so more Human Biology and physiology, biomechanics, Nutrition etc. I am also dyslexic, I haven't really had any help at University although my LEA did provide some funding for extra books, computer etc, just depends on what type of dyslexia you have to what they will provide you with. It has been hard at times but I am glad I have done it.

All I can suggest is keep yourself organised, I hated school myself and since being at Uni found have found that sometimes in Lectures the lecturer goes too quickly for me to keep up with notes, (dictaphone can help here) also sometimes if you can get hold of your lecturers and they may get you notes before the lecture so you can sit listen and just supplement. Also get a couple of people you know make good notes and use there to supplement what you have.

Don't let it get you down, Uni can be a grapht sometimes and the work can get you down but will soon be the summer and your final year will fly by, trust me!!

Best of Luck

Just finishing up my MSc and have found it fr easier than i found my undergrad because it was more specialised, whilst being dyslexic is a handicap you should get enough support from your uni or college to fight through it degrees arnt that hard so long as you put the effort in. But must be hard running a business to all the best

i've done a HND, then a degree (not a top up of hnd) and just coming up to finishing my masters.

i really enjoy learning, i love the pressure of the deadlines, i've also worked through my degree for myself.

i wont say its been easy but i dont think degrees should be easy.

i will add that my MSc has not been as hard as what i thought it would be.

stick it out is the only advice i can give you, to give up now would be a travesty and i'm sure you would regret it for years to come.

i found my degree ok tbh

if your dyslexic contact any local independent opticians (not some sh!tty specsavers!) and asked to be screened for "visual stress/mears irlen syndrone/scotopic sensitivity syndrome"- although not the same as dyslexia wearing specifically coloured lenses may well make reading easier

(the above goes for anyone who has dyslexia type symptoms when reading, regardless of whether your dyslexic or not)

BEng Hons (1st)
MPhil Manufacturing - Research fellow - not quite a PhD but higher than a masters ;-)

i went as a mature student. here is some serious advice..

Give your tutor what he wants...

Don't try and learn something, you do that when you get a new job - just make sure you pass and the only way to do that with distinction is to give the person who is marking you exactly what they are looking for even if you don't agree with it.

I would say at least half of the people i went to college with felt like this at one stage or another. I know I felt like this numerous times over numerous years!

Of those who dropped out, when i see them around, they all still regret dropping out.
Funnily enough it always seems to be people who are in or near the end of their second year who feel like this.

Once you finish 2nd year, you should see it as the point of no return. You've done over 50% of the slog, so just hang in there.
Your final year, despite probably being difficult, will go very quickly.

Hi mate,

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Dylexia can explain a lot of the problems and frustrations you are having though.

When I was doing my UG degree I knew some people who had that, fortunately the support at the uni is quite good. You could get a free laptop, extra time in exams etc and other things.

If you are based at a particular university, look up their learning support department, get in touch with them. Explain that you think you are dyslexic and are struggling and would like some help and ask them what support they have to offer for people who suffer from dyslexia. You might be surprised how much help there is, as well as financial help. Worth looking into mate!!

Good luck,
mcl
