i know that most people say rest like 30 sec to 1 min between sets. but what i wanna know is what happens if u rest like half an hour between, say tricep extension, lateral raise etc.

does it have any effect or is it still ok?

You dont need an hour rest between sets, its wasting time. majority of strength will come back after 90-120 seconds

also my advice is to read the newbie article

but say for whatever u do rest like half an hour between sets. does it cancel out the excercise u just did or can you still get stronger/more bulk?

basically is there something wrong with it besides just being a time waste?

Why would you wait that long between sets?
Pointless imo and possibly more chance of injury as it would maybe be as if your not warming up properly....

lol yeah i would cancel out.
most likely you would do a heavy set do lil damage to your muscle, then it isnt bein trained so goes in to recovery.
you wouldnt gain anything apart from boredem

no not training constantly between sets mate, say half hour rest between each set would most likely cancel it out.

i think half an hour is too long to rest if training in a normal mannor for sure, but i completely disagree with the cancelling out idea.

you can take as long between sets as you wish, the only disadvantage is that cooling down can be a problem, the biggest advantage would be maxium recovery,,i take anywhere up to ten- fifteen mins between sets when using maxium poundages, as for doing a different exercise with a long rest is fine, this is no difference than doing say chest in the morning and back in the afternoon..

i do that quite often, chest morning back afternoon, but wouldnt say in between sets (chest, pressing) half hour be to much and you wouldnt gain anything?

after training your muscle goes into recovery dont it, if you do a set, then wait half hour, in that half hour isnt it gonna go into recovery?

of course you would gain, anything that taxes the muscle harder enough to make it grow, does not matter about time between sets, powerlifters can often take a long time to recover between sets, are they not big ?
the muscle will recover is strength in a short period of time after the set, but it will not start to grow then

cheers for the replies.

well i'll try to cut down on the rest to like 10 mins or so.

the reason i posted this was beacuse i did take long rests between sets but only beacuse resting like 2 mins or so meant that i was having trouble doing the 2nd and 3rd sets i.e. incorrect posture, not having enough strength to do all the reps, putting pressure on my back when doing bicep excercises etc.

In terms of energy resynthesis you'll be fully recovered within 4-5 minutes.

10mins is far too long you meant to have your workout complete within 45 mins, an hour at max and you will never be able to do that if you take 10 mins rest per set.
