Hi all,

I started going to the gym again after a 7 month break. When i started 3 weeks ago, i started with cardio (running) 3 weeks ago. I used to be able to run for 1hrs per session. This is not hight intesity running just normal jogging.

I think i made a mistake by trying to run for one hour when i started 3 weeks ago. It was going all right until last Monday when i suddenly started to feel some pain on my ankle. I dont remember having any sorts of ankle pain ever in my life so this was a bit worrying. Actually i have had a different kind of pain when i went on Holiday and spent the whole day walking.

The pain itself is on the inside of the feet area. The image below show an example of just where the pain is. The pain is just slightly higher to the left than where the red mark is on the image below(On the bone itself)

I can walk and but sometimes it gets very painfull that i limp a little bit. Sometimes i dont feel any pain but sometimes i feel that i want to elevate my foot to reduce the pain. The pain is worse if i press using my thumb the area on the bone as that is where the pain is. I am also aware that the shoes i was using were a bit worn out so these could have been the main course.

I havent been to the hospital yet as i was hoping that it was just a minor injury and thought that it would go away after 2 or 3 days. The pain is now still there after 6 days and now i am even more worried. Do you think its worth going to the hospital? or should i give it at least another week or two?

And also, i have stopped running or doing any kind of cardio since i started getting this pain but i have started to do wheightlifting. Im not training my legs though as this will just damage my ankle so im only doing upper body exercises. I have noticed that whenever i lift something with my right hand, i feel the pain on my right leg(the injured ankle is on the right leg) so i try and lift everything with my left hand. Is this wise? or should i take a break alltogher? Im trying to avoid not doing anything after just 3 weeks starting as i might loose the motivation again.

Does anyone know anything of this pain? Do you know how serious it is? how long does it take to heal? Should i visit the hospital? And most importantly will i be able to be running again when it heals?

It's always worth getting a medical opnion on something like this. Consider what pressure your ankles are put through when you train ! I'm not suggesting that you have the same condition as me, but 18 months ago after periodic ankle pain and swelling I finally sought advice, it was eventually diagnosed as ................ Gout !!! Anti inflamatories control it ,but get your ankles looked at, without them you wouldn't "stand up" to training !!

I second that

Be vary wary of internet advice about injuries - you have no guarantee the person offering advice knows what they're talking about, they can't see you, and any course of action they recommend may well make it worse

Is it on the bone on 1 particular point or is it the length of the red mark?
If it is the whole length then I know theres a ligament around there going up the side of the ankle.
If thats the case I would go see a physio to sort yourself out. Ask around see who people recommend in your area as ive been to some pants ones who just keep you coming for your money.
If it was on the bone go see a dr. Not sure if a&e would do anything for you if its over a week old injury. So maybe make an apointment with dr.

Hi mate,

Get the docs but then dont take too much heed of what the GP says in terms of sporting injuries. I injured my ankle on the treadmill in the EXACT same spot and it took the NHS 6 months to get to the bottom of it!

First thing youll GP will say is its a sprain or strain most likely, rest, ice, anti inflmatories, elevation when possible which is fair cop but if it doesnt go away keep going back to him. It took 2 x-rays, 10 sessions of physio and also £100 worth of private chiropractor sessions and they all got it wrong in their different diagnosis.

It was only after seeing a consultant and having an MRI that he was led to believe it was a cyst that had burst under pressure, another 6 months later (3 weeks ago) Ive had a cyst removal from the mallelalos and a bone graft to fill it. Still in the recovery phase so wont know yet if this has fixed it.

For you though firts port of call is GP if after another 7 days its still as bad go back to him and pester, request an x-ray, my advice is dont always believe your GPs advice they are not experts in this field as my case proved!

I went to see the doctor today. I waited nearly 4 hours to see the doctor. I had an X-ray and he said that there is nothing wrong with the ankle. He said that its probably a sprain and should heal in about 6 weeks or maybe more.

I dont really understand it because the pain today is exactly the same as it was 10 days ago and now they are telling me that its just a sprain. I think i will give it another 2 to 3 weeks and if there is no improvement i will go back and see tham. :)
