Terrier -> Squats feel awkward (Apr. 27 2008 23:10:16)

I haven't been doing squats for a while I have been leg pressing but have decided to go back to them...

I am finding that I cannot grip the bar properly without finding discomfort in moving my arms that far back now passed my shoulders if that makes sense???

Has anyone else had this problem or am I just one unflexible t**t that needs some flexibility classes???

Your not the only one
Try a high bar position, rest it on your traps rather than rear delts.

I find it's easier to grab the bar and pull myself under it... if I don't do that I can only get my finger tips to it or reach really wide to the collars.

Try some of these beforehand:

They limber your shoulders and wrists up so should make it more comfortable

Don't be put off by the name, you're not actually dislocating your shoulders. Start with a wide grip and move your way inwards - don't force it though

It might take a while before they start to work, but they should help

Just tried them... a broom handle isn't long enough LOL

I tried it with a bar and my hands are at the collars!!! I need work.

had the same problem, just stuck with it and it was ok after a month

Just tried this.... I could only just get it past me head >> there was me thinking the introduction of a broom would allow me to do it as well as the guy in the clip.... I need to get a grip!!

Stick with it, it takes time but you do loosen up

You can also do it with bands or a length of rope

I got a mate of mine to try this a few weeks ago - he tried it with a 5' bar and even with his hands placed right at the ends he couldn't do it

He has very bad posture and flexibility issues though - when trying to touch his toes he can barely get his fingertips past his knees

Sounds like front squats

I do these every week, they're superb not only for quad development but for core strength too

People who are used to back squatting often find these quite challenging, and you can't use as much weight either

yes just grim and bare it, also found doing walkouts with a huge weight helped too, if you dont hold it you drop it and look foolish, gives you an incentive..
