Hey guys!
I'm in need of some pro advice! I have been chatting to a few guys at my gym and they have recently recommended that use protein shakes!?
I'm 20 years old, 16.5 stone and workout 4 times a week with 2 cardio sessions. Plus I play rugby during the week too!!
I have never used protein shakes or anything for that matter! But I think that a protein shake could aid my protein intake and benefit my training?
I would like to know if there are any side effects to these products, I only want to use something natural with no substances etc, just pure protein!
I am thinking of using the Holland & Barrett Natural Whey Protein 908g? These are the details.Holland & Barrett Natural Whey Protein
Any ideas on the best product?
Is whey protein better then just protein, and how much should I be taking a day is it 1.5g to 1kg body weight?
Anyone know if from Adonis Nutrition if the Whey Protein Concentrate 80% Protein is any good?
I think I'm heading towards either Whey Portein Isolate (NZ) or Impact Whey Isolate from MyProtein has anyone got any feedback on any of this?

whole diet is what counts, protein shakes can help top up protein intake. They are derrived from milk so don't really have side effects unless you are sensitve to milk.

if you do purchase some,myprotein is a great place, opt for concentrate as its cheaper.

However get your diet nailed first.

Yeah thanks mate!
I've never used them before, I've always relied on diet and hard work, but I'm just curious to see what they do or if they will have any effect?!

Protein helps the body to recover quicker by supplying it with various essential nutrients, imo it is best used after your workout, training or match to refuel and help your body recover. Protein consists of chains of amino acids that are used by our bodies to help muscles grow quicker.

Many poeple/websites recommended 1gram-2 grams daily per lb of bodyweight eg if you weigh 180lbs you should consume at least 180 grams protein a day.

are you playing at wasps? if so why don't you speak to their nutritionist, surely you get all of your supplements for free anyway. i thought maximuscle were a sponsor of wasps

No I'm not playin' at Wasps, but that is my aim!
So how much would I use a week? I'm thinkin 3 times a day the days I train and eating well without taking it on the days I don't?
How much protein intake would I need to have a day if I'm 234lbs, bout 106kg?
I was told bout 1.5 x body weight?

Red Man -> RE: Protein (Apr. 29 2008 20:14:50)

Guidelines are 1.5g of protein for every lb of body weight. Quite a lot so work out what your current diet gives and have a think about if you are going wrong anywhere. Shakes are good to add extra protein but try to get most of your intake from proper food imo, shakes are there to supplement the intake, hence the name supplements. [;)]

Oh of course!
I've been 100% natural throughout my training, I was just curious to see what your guys' opinion and advice on them and if I should give them a go?!
So thanks for all the advice guys! Much appreciated

True- it's just as natural as milk. Protein powder is just food, but has a bad image IMO

waspscentre12 -> RE: Protein (Apr. 29 2008 23:56:19)

Sorry, I meant that I've only ever eaten, weight lifted and done cardio, I've not ever used supplements or anything like that. That's why I wanted people's views and advice! I think I may invest in some!
How many times per day and week would you use protein supplements?
Only on the days you train 3 x daily?
