Oh God bad manners like this really drives me mad ("drives" boom boom, did you see what I did there?!), whether it be people in cars not thanking you for letting them through or people with trolleys in supermarkets or people who've held a door open for or whatever. Common courtesy is severly lacking in this country nowadays.

Another one that gets me is when there's a big queue of traffic to pull out at a busy junction and no-one is letting anyone in. If everyone just let one car in the world would be a much nicer place.

Some twat in a blue car pulled out on me today. Love to see him do that when a yellow coat is in the passenger seat.

I've noticed that women with kids that have a people carrier tend to think they own the road. Your car looks like a sack of ****, missus and for that amount?

It's usually pretty grim round our way. Crawling traffic and awkward junctions mean a lot of people are wound up when driving. In the past I've been frantically beeped from the car behind for letting a car out of a side road, even though we're sitting in a queue of traffic a mile long... some people make car journeys needlessly unpleasant.

I always try to let people out and give waves of thanks, but it feels like swimming against the tide sometimes. Although, I don't drive very much really so I probably can't judge others as I'm sure I'm less burnt out by it all.

Had a lovely little drive on Saturday, though. Was sent out on an errand to the other side of town to buy a lawn edger, and not terribly pleased about it. It took bloody ages with the traffic, but it was nice day and everybody seemed unusually polite. Was getting waved out at almost every junction, all the oncoming cars waited politely behind the parked cars on their side of the road, everybody was exchanging "thank you" waves, and someone even waited for me to get in the car, start up and pull out!

Result: I came home with a smile on my face and in a much better mood than I set out in in the first place. Why can't it be like that every time?

I'm taking driving lessons at the minute, and I have make a conscious effort not to! Apparently it differs from tester to tester, but some will see it as not being in control of the car, but just from watching my parents drive and from being inherently over-polite (my boss calls me "<insert actual name here>-too-nice") it's natural to acknowledge others.

I'm disappointed lilbigman.
I had visions of you chauffeuring Ruth Madoc around of a Sunday afternoon.

Do you mean a driving test examiner?

Haha.

Yeah, I meant one of them. My last Examiner looked like a trainspotter/ looks like he goes to bet on horses, IMO.

Ah, I remember this from when I was learning. My instructor told me that the correct protocol was to raise your fingers from the wheel in a small thanking gesture, but keeping your thumb around the wheel and the heel of your hand in firm contact so that you are still controlling it with both hands. I did this on my test and was not marked down for it. May vary from centre to centre, like you say, but maybe your instructor will know if that's ok in your area?

Out of interest, could wrapping oneself in black plastic bin liners so that it's tight against your skin like a rubber/pvc dress, be classed as crossdressing?

I always acknowledge (but find the two fingers usually offends) but have on a rare occasion slipped up so maybe I'm one of those female ones that has driven passed you on occasion and annoyed you

Odyysey, you power at being able to tell the age of a person behind a wheel of a car is great, how do you do it

can you not guess a persons age from 5-10 meters kitty?, just because there behind a wheel as you put it doesnt mean there face is actually behind the wheel

I always acknowledge someone who has let me through.

It's just politeness.

Round our way, we get a lot of "traffic calming islands" which completely block one lane. So one lane always has right of way, and the other has to give way because otherwise they move into the oncoming lane. I've given up actually expecting people to get the hang of this concept and now assume that most people would be more happy to have a head on collision than to let anyone through. Traffic calming, my *rse.

The council / Highways agency (?) around our way don't help the situation though TBH

In our busy High street they have put "loading" areas , which are supposed to provide parking for loading / unloading (although they are used for everyday parking , again , people being selfish & not giving a toss about inconveniencing everyone else - here is a crude diagram of how these are arranged - the parking spaces are represented by the X's , each Xbeing a car length - There is two way traffic in this road
so the problem is , there is almost always a "stalemate" situation in the middle of this mess which usually ends up with people getting out of their cars & walking 20 cars back to ask them to reverse !! I have never seen a traffic warden or a police office even help to put the sitiuation right , but I have seen a police car use their sirens and half the pavements to get themselves out of it
The H's are a Zebra crossing , which makes sure there are always long queues from each direction

It is no wonder that most drivers are angry !! Whoever designed that layout needs sacking !!

^^^ That sounds like my girls' school.

Yellow "School - keep clear" markings right outside plus traffic calming devices at each end of the road (so only one car can get past, the other has to give way)

In principle it would work fine but you get the idiot parents who stop in the marked areas to drop their offspring off resulting in a bottleneck and a massive job to get the cars moving again.

Back to that overriding word again - inconsideration.

I find the vast majority of female drivers to be the main offenders

Totally agree with you on this Mr Cheese. I get very frustrated on my regular drive into work with women drivers. Do they know how to navigate a roundabout? I spend most of my journey into work sitting in queues watching women at the front waiting forever for a gap big enough to fly a 747 through.

Something else that vexes thee, are drivers who hog the middle lane on motorways when there is no traffic at all in the slow lane meaning you either have to commit a driving offence by undertaking them, or indicate over two lanes to go around them. Grrrrr
