ORIGINAL: spider-man Totally agree with you on this Mr Cheese. I get very frustrated on my regular drive into work with women drivers. Do they know how to navigate a roundabout? I spend most of my journey into work sitting in queues watching women at the front waiting forever for a gap big enough to fly a 747 through. However, a slow road user has as much right to be there as you do. What if they're driving a 1.0 fiesta with no acceleration? What about a moped? What about riding a bike? quote:
ORIGINAL: spider-man Something else that vexes thee, are drivers who hog the middle lane on motorways when there is no traffic at all in the slow lane meaning you either have to commit a driving offence by undertaking them, or indicate over two lanes to go around them. Grrrrr With you on this one. Undertaking is not an offence. It might be considered dangerous driving, but I don't think it's actually an offence. "Overtaking on the left is not an offence in the United Kingdom. However, all drivers are bound by our road traffic laws, and liable to prosecution for offences such as careless or dangerous driving. Enforcement of the law is, of course, a matter for the police who will make their decisions on whether to prosecute in the circumstances of each individual case" http://www.middlelanemorons.com/script/middle_lane_morons_prob.php The more pressing thing about middle lane hogging is that it indicates a lack of awareness of their surroundings, which isn't exactly ideal on a motorway.

Fortunately this rarely happens, sure from time to time someone won't acknowledge my gracious behaviour towards them, and yes I'll change my friendly tone to grumpy, hard-done by one and swear at them behind my closed window but in general I get thanked and in general I thank those who do the same for me. I will also patronisingly thank those who seem to make an effort NOT to let me in

Women are the worst for not saying thanks IMO. I was brought up being told that thank you costs nothing.

I hate it when ignorant bastards do that I'd love to follow them and ram them off the road. Again not wishing to generalise but I hate it when you slow down to give way usually leaving a huge gap and flash your lights and some tit doesn't go(I've noticed this is usually women drivers too perhaps a confidence thing?) In a similar vein i hate it if I hold a door for someone sometimes even stopping to hold it for them and they don't say cheers, I usually say "aye nae bother" in a sarcastic voice if they do this however. Feekin great British public shower of ****e the lot of it.

As said above.... whether your driving or holding a door open, is it really that hard to thank someone! I find its both men and women.

I find though its a bit overdramatic sometimes the extent someone will go to keep the door open for you, I'd rather they left it so I didn't feel like I owe a massive debt of gratitude. I guess they don't want to come accross as being rude. For people with kids and buggys fair enough, but no need to do that for a fully capable full grown adult

ORIGINAL: Lord Monkcheese It's becoming increasing more common for the driver of the other vehicle to just drive past without any kind of acknowledgement at all. I wonder about this. (I mean obviously: manners-on-decline, no-common-decency, can't-leave-your-front-door-open, Britain-hotbed-crime, bring-back-hanging, etc. etc..) But also, car windscreens seem to be getting more and more raked - I suppose to make the car more aerodynamic and missile-like. And the glass seems to be getting more and more tinted. I suppose to make the drivers seem more suave and sophisticated. I've noticed that this sometimes makes the driver difficult to see properly through the windscreen, because the windscreen is reflecting the sky. And the all-round tinted glass means the driver him or herself is somewhat less illuminated. That's my theory. (And I think it rocks).

I always give a couple of flashses or raise a couple fingers off the wheel (in a good way) I don't say thank you to taxi drivers though, or let them out.

Yes always acknowledge, and feel the same way, I regret SO MUCH letting people out when they don't acknowledge it, but by then it's too late! I'm sitting there thinking "God I wish I never let them through!" quote:
ORIGINAL: Dr Zoidberg Yep ! notice it every day - In fact I now expect it and see it as a pleasant surprise when someone does give a little nod / wave It's not just driving though IMO , I think with the general decline in manners / politeness , people often don't acknowledge when they have just been done a favour , I hold doors open for people ( simply the way I was brought up ) - and 9 times out of ten the person I held the door for will breeze past and not say a word , or (and this really winds me up !! ) the person BEHIND me will just barge through the door I have opened for someone coming the other way The long and short is , People are tossers ! - some people are so busy looking out for themselves that they simply don't give a toss about anyone else I reckon the only way to deal with this is to start teaching manners in Schools - nip this kind of thing in the bud God yeah holding the doors open for people as you describe is another one, but at least you can say something, - quite often I'll say a loud "Thanks!" - often this seems to immediately pull them out of their ignorant little world and they'll thank you straight back (probably wondering why you both thanked each other at the time, - then hopefully appreciating my sarcasm a few seconds later down the corridor) you're right, - most people are 24 karat W*NKERS.

I don't drive, but if I'm a passenger with my parents or sister I will always thank the other driver if the person driving can't or won't! When I cycle I always acknowledge as best I can, not always easy when trying to steer, but a nod in their direction accompanied by a smile usually does the job. I hate people that aren't courteous, it doesn't cost anything and is one of the small things that makes the world a nicer place to live in! I was in the supermarket the other day and there was 2 members of staff stacking opposite shelves meaning only one trolley could get through. I pulled out the way (despite the fact I would have got there first) to let some girl through and she didn't say a thing. Students can be the worst sometimes around here and it does my nut because we all get tarred with the same brush. I always hold doors open for people, even when they are miles behind me. I once helped a lady up the stairs with a buggy and she didn't even thank me, just walked to her car!

Manners cost nothing. What does it take to acknowledge that you are even aware there is someone else on the road!!.I was brought up to have manners, something that is dissapearing fast these days. For example, the woman in my local corner shop don't say please or thank you.She don't even tell you the price sometimes, just sticks her haggard old claw out and expects you to cross her palm with silver.

generally speaking manners on the whole are on the decline. i dont let it bother me anymore if someone doesnt say thanks, its not a reflection on me but on them. if they get something out of it then fair do's to them, usually i just tell myself that they must have been **** on from a height to be so rude and lacking in basic manners. i have been known to stick my leg out and trip a bloke up who i'd held the door open for, he pushed passed me so i clipped his back foot and laughed as he sprawled on the floor, walked off and said thanks to him.
