This rant falls under the general and all too common theme of "inconsideration".

When driving, quite often I'll find myself approaching parked cars on the left hand side of the road and cars coming towards me. There is no legal requirement for either of the vehicles to give way but common courtesy says the vehicle on the same side as the parked cars should do so.

It's becoming increasing more common for the driver of the other vehicle to just drive past without any kind of acknowledgement at all. Not a simple flash of lights, a raise of the hand, even a cheeky wink - nothing.

Not wishing to generalise but I find the vast majority of female drivers to be the main offenders of this heinous offence and I ask you MT members, both male and female, are you one of these rude, non-acknowledging drivers, or are you a decent, upstanding member of the driving community?

Yes all the time, I hate inconsiderate drivers.

i always make a point of acknowledging, as I find it annoying when people when people don't acknowledge me! If I am ignored I tend to do an over the top acknowledgement hoping to catch their eye..

Always acknowledge with a wave or a flash.

Can we add to the list those drivers who seem to forget that the person travelling up hill has right of way

Always acknowledge anyone who lets me through.

I agree it does seem to be ladies intheir 40's and 50's who never say thanks. Just keep on driving with that "I've got tunnel vision and can't see you" expression on their face.

white vans are the main ones... they think that bulldozing down a residential area (20pmh limit in portsmouth now) at 35mph gives them right of way.

Yes! Particularly annoys me this does (as does driving in general though).

Couple of days ago driving through an estate, I am on a road with cars parked on the RIGHT side of the road. I see another car oncoming and assume it will it pull in line behind the the 5 or so parked cars, but no, it immediately crosses onto my side of the road, despite me only being about 10 metres away from the the first park car. I slam on the brakes to prevent a head on and manage to leave just enough space for the other car to manoeuvre through. I see the driver's face and lo and behold it's some daft bint with those fu*king river island sun-glasses on which every daft c.nt seems to be wearing (plus it was an overcast day and had been all morning ). I immediately give her a menacing glare. And you know what the cheeky bint does?.......pokes her tongue out at me .

Fortunatley I managed to flash her the up-yours just before we moved out of each other's site, so I pulled away not too discontented.

Me and my gf went out for dinner with her sister, the sister was driving down country lanes and this car pulled over to let her by, she didnt acknowledge him so he gave her two fingers I burst out laughing and they asked why I was laughing,
I said that guy just swore at you to which the reply was "what guy I didnt see anyone" what you didnt see the guy sat in the 2 ton silver car you had to squeeze by

I always acknowledge (but find the two fingers usually offends) but have on a rare occasion slipped up so maybe I'm one of those female ones that has driven passed you on occasion and annoyed you

Odyysey, you power at being able to tell the age of a person behind a wheel of a car is great, how do you do it

My route to the gym takes me down a mile long residential street with cars parked in clusters on the right hand side with gaps to park/give way in-between. I was approaching a large cluster and a Volvo was coming towards me. There were plenty of gaps where the car could have pulled in but it seemed to be drawing ever closer.

I thought they're surely going to pull in now and give way but no, they're still coming towards me and me towards them.

There's only one gap left (there's now a whole row of parked cars on my right so I can't give way at all) and insanely the crazy car ignores the gap and comes ploughing towards me. Only through my awesome driving skills I was able to bring the Primera (SRi) to a halt averting a crash. And lo and behold, oblivious to what had just occurred, was a 40ish year old woman, seemingly unperturbed by the chaos she had created.

Cars were backed up behind me so I rolled forwards whilst gesticulating for her to reverse.
She somehow mastered this and went back far enough to allow me past.

I wound down my window and asked WTF she was doing, couldn't she see me, did she think her car could magically squeeze through the tiny gap?

Her response was a nonchalant Gallic shrug of the shoulders (the equivalent of an adult "whatever").
My response was a rage of pure venom, 4 letter words, questions of her parentage and a contorted and very red face.

Like JBRSS though, I don't get stressed over driving.........

We'll let this slide for now and say no more on it, but that's your final warning for this terrible discretion

Yep ! notice it every day - In fact I now expect it and see it as a pleasant surprise when someone does give a little nod / wave

It's not just driving though IMO , I think with the general decline in manners / politeness , people often don't acknowledge when they have just been done a favour , I hold doors open for people ( simply the way I was brought up ) - and 9 times out of ten the person I held the door for will breeze past and not say a word , or (and this really winds me up !! ) the person BEHIND me will just barge through the door I have opened for someone coming the other way

The long and short is , People are tossers ! - some people are so busy looking out for themselves that they simply don't give a toss about anyone else
I reckon the only way to deal with this is to start teaching manners in Schools - nip this kind of thing in the bud

I think Drab's quote would be appropriate here.
Something along the lines of "I open doors for people in the same way that I eat my dinner off a plate with a knife and fork"

I may have misquoted him there but good manners and being polite is inherent in a few people rather than being something you have to consciously be aware of.

I wave every time when it's daylight. When it's too dark to even see the person I don't. I hate people flashing on their full beams at me so I don't at night!

While I'm on the subject of motoring, I'll also throw into the mix those people that offer you right of way (maybe at a junction or in the aforementioned parked car scenario) but don't give you any indication of their intentions. So you're left their unsure of whether it's safe to go then just at the pricise moment you pull out, they do too leading to that emabrrassing and potentially dangerous "you go - no I go - no you go" situation.

Worse though are those pompous fools who do the above then after a nanoseconds hesitation arrogantly and dismissively wave you along, for example a pedestrian waiting to cross a road unsure of whether it's safe to do so.

Let it be known you have to tread a very thin line to get on the right side of LMC!!!!

<I'm feeling much calmer now!>
