Did for me, i had a teeny waist before i started doing them. A years worth of deadlidting and its definatly thickened my midsection.

so does it reduce the effect of the v taper. Would it make someones pysique look much worse if they already had wide hips?

Deadlifts won't effect your V from the much. Thats more down to big obliques. Depth wise (from the side) I think it will take away from the V slightly but won't be very noticable for a long time.
Age - 18 Bench - 95kg (at 62kg) Deadlift - 120kg (at 62kg) Squat - 100kgx5 (at 62kg) Front Squat - 92.5kg (at 62kg)

ORIGINAL: darkershade so does it reduce the effect of the v taper. Not necessarily Your waist measurement will get larger through consistent deadlifting, hence my answer to your earlier question. This is pretty much unavoidable, unless a person has muscles which do not respond to training, because deadlifts will build the size of the spinal erectors, which are at waist level However, the mass at waist level acquired through deadlifting goes mostly on the back. Therefore the V Taper, viewed from the front or back, is not effected so much Still, some bodybuilder types do avoid deads. Then again, probably even more love them Personal choice really IMO Personally I think they are one of the best exercises around. Deads build a lot of the muscles responsible for the V Taper too! But then I'm not a bodybuilder. Perhaps some of our bber types can comment further

If you want to keep your waist as small as possible, drop deadlifts and squads. Switch to using a smith machine for both.

Deadlifting is not performed through a fixed range of motion. The bar moves up and backwards, using a smith machine fixes its plane of movement placing the body in an unatural position.

Deadlifts and squats inparticular make you look alot more blocky. After years of heavy squats my waist has got thicker and thicker.

smith machine doesn't allow for a natural range of motion + difference in use of stabilisers avoid the smith machine mate

Care to explain your reasoning behind this? The only reason for a statement like that is mental illness.

im sure people will agree the benefits of exercises such as squats and deads far outweighs the 'blocky' look it may produce
