Hi, I've been asking myself lately whether it really is important to lift very heavy. For instance, I can barely do 1 pull-up and I'm 80kg and lean. I see other guys who do 10 pull ups in a row and they look 70kg or less. Same goes for other things like biceps curls (guys doing 30kg and more with 30cm guns). What I mean is that volume is just what you get for eating bigger+everyday exercise, gym just gets you stronger. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

If you don't lift beyond the capabilities of your muscles then you won't grow. Simple as that.

the body will not change to meet demands it can already handle this is why i frown on pyramid sets why faff about with 3 sets building up to your 'working set' when the energy can be better used for an even heavier working set? i.e 10 x 20kg 10 x 40kg 10 x 60kg 10 x 80kg 10 x 40kg if you dropped the 30 reps with the lower weight i'd say you'd be hitting 90kg no worries ensure you warm up properly and you'll be fine

when i started in january. i could hardly BBcurl 10kg 5kg each side. now im curling 30kg 15 each side. i can do 40kg 20each side. but only 5 rep's. it's a natural progression your body get used to doing the weights. and youl some be moveing up. curling 30kg feel's like it did when i was only curling 10kg 4 month ago.

Its good form, just not text book.

Form is everything IMO. I spent 3 years chasing big weights and altho had 220 dead in the bag and 190k squat, (not that heavy but heavy for me), I did not have the muscular development I was after. Dropped 100k from the dead and went right back to 60k on the squat to relearn technique last november and altho I am "only" back up to 140k dead and 120k squat both for 7 reps my development has soared. Concentrate on the stretch and muscular contraction then start increasing the weight.

its not important to move massive weights, just make sure that the load goes up gradually over time.

Your muscle is composed of fibres and motor units with different jobs. You are looking to stimulate the ones with the most potential for growth and in order to do this you have to put a lot of force through them. High threshold moter units are an example lifting heavy and lifting quickly stimulates these. An analogy would be the legs of a long distance runner (many reps low weight) or a sprinter (few reps, higher forces) Also, men look a bit silly lifting pink vinyl weights. If you;re talking load versus form then for MOST situations you would go for form first but the more experienced you are the more you can play with this. It's also worth noting that form differs slightly for each person.
