As a new starter I'm finding I've not got enough energy to complete my sets. Currently I'm doing 4 X 10 but I'm going to go heavier and do 3 X 6 to see how I get on.

Whats the best way to get some decent pre-workout energy inside you?

How many meals do you have before you train? These should be your energy source.

have a decent feed 1h before training with a lean source of protein like a chicken breast and a good low gi carb like brown rice.
this should give you sustained energy throughout the session.
if your still crashing mid session then possibly have a carb drink during training like maxi carb by vyotech which is basically maltodextrin but is the drink of gods lol

Do you feel tired/low on energy before a workout? Or is it just during reps? Are your rests short, 1minute? Or do you do your next set when you feel ready? perhps 2-3mins?
What meals are you eating in the 6hour period BEFORE a workout?
Are you sipping any energy drink/shake during a workout?

pauld - 2 Meals before training - Chicken or Fish and Rice orPasta

anabolicjay - Thanks for the advice.

mussy - Not sure what that is but I'll have a look

richsINS - I've been feeling a little low on energy before my workout but generally OK. I train with a mate so my rests are usually about 1-2 minutes while he goes his set. I usually wait a little longer if I feel I'm not ready.

Meals are as above. Plus I have a Protein Shake morning and afternoon before my workout.

Not having anything to drink except water while working out.

How long before training, how much pasta/rice.
Is your life sedetry or active?
Are you dieting down or bulking up?

When did you start noticing you were feeling low on energy before workouts? Is this caused by recent diet changes, additional cardio before a workout or a busy life or any other new factors that may of changed recently in your opinion?

Last meal before workout is approx 3 hours before.

Life is very sedetry. Desk based most of the time.

Bulking up.

Diet has been in place for about a month. I've been training for 2 weeks. I do 10 minutes on the running machine to warm up. Nothing too heavy, about a mile usually.

Nothing has changed really. I'm gonna try and get more sleep as I'm only getting around 7 hours at the moment.

Hmm - Ive not read up much on warm ups, so reluctant to tell you to drop the running as it may help keep injurys at bay. However if your feeling tired, the running is probably contributing to it and being tired whilst trying to workout sucks. Infact when im tired, ill train another day as its a case of 'Train hard or go home'.

Do you eat carbs say, 6 hours before a workout as well? I just wonder if the 3hour meal before workout gets to you intime to use it, it may still be sat in your stomach digesting.

I'm really a n00b at all this so can't comment on whether the food is being digested intime.

I'm changing my mindset to yours 'Train hard or go home' :)

You will probly find this is due to your overall diet.

Post your diet up in full for further help, but you want a good lean source of protein a few hrs before training, then an hour before a nice carb up with weetabix or oats or brown rice or pasta, along with some fruit and you should be fuelled enough to get through your workout.

You should put training before dinner.

As im reading above you have no food after training,a pwo meal is vital imo.
