Do we have any runners in the house?
I have taken to running and sacrificing lifting weights recently as I am running 10k for charity - problem is I am becoming addicted to running.....anyway. I am 6'4 and only 15 stone but not your usual runners physique and was wondering how I am doing.

I consistently run 5k in 23 minutes and 10k in about 48 minutes. I am trying to find a balance of weights and running but running really does knock the energy out of me and I am eating a lot of carbs now.

I have lost about 12lbs in weight in 4 months of runnin...are there people out there who still manage to run (and get good times) whilst being able to continue adding muscle through weight sessions?

I was running for a bit. It all depends on how much you run and stuff in comparison with weights and i'm sure your diet will have a lot to do with it too. E.g. you'd have to eat more as you'd be loosing more. If i get my place in the next london marathon then i'll be able to fit into this group.

I am doing the great north run in October. I do weights still but nowhere in the league of most guys/gals on here. I concentrate on cardio as i do triathlons too, but the strength work is important in all that too.

Hi Guys

I was just about to start a topic on this when I saw your post. I am in a similar position to you N2L, I am about 14.5 stone and play rugby all through the winter (Winger/fullback), now the season is over I have started to do more running and have completed my first proper 10k race yesterday in Watford. Now obviously training for both disciplines is completely different, but I think I will see some added benefit come the new season in terms of improved fitness.

For the last year I have also started lifting weights on a FB program, consisting of the normal bench, squat, seated rows/pull downs, dips/pull ups, and some isolation work, to help with my general strength and for aesthetic purposes !!
Would this sort of program work along side middle/long distance running ? If not would it have any noticeable detraction against my possible performance ?

I would ideally like to continue my weight work even if this meant modifying it somewhat to help improve my running, my time yesterday was 51m 54s so not fast but not to bad for a first attempt I would like to try and get my time down under 50m this year if possible.

Thanks Danny

5ft 11" and 14.5 stone mate, I could probably do with losing a bit of weight maybe up to a stone, make me a bit lighter/quicker on my feet, normally I would be playing sevens now, but I am also studying for my accountancy qualification, so I find gym and running in my lunch hour at work fits in better with my schedule.

I find I have quite big quads and hamstrings from all the rugby but my calf's are small in comparison, apart from actually looking better, what benefits could I expect to see if I made a conscious effort to work on and increase the size of said calf's ?

Well I am now undecided which route to go down still. I did 10k in a very comfortable 44mins, looking to get this right down. I enjoy running just as much as lifting weights and finding good gains in running at the moment so that may influence me. I am still lifting weights but already dipped below 15 stone for the first time in bloody ages, convinced a lot of muscle has been lost despite lower BF.

Maybe I should just treat running as part of a cut and not run as much when bulking..? I am doing 7-10k every weekday, saturday off and then 15k on a sunday so I think I could wind it down a bit when I am ready for bulking...
