hey, they gym i go to sucks and they dont have any heavy barbells, can i deadlift on a smith machine? I tryed the exercise but obviously the bar isn't held close to the body as it only lifts vertically.

No, no, no.
Sub dumbbell deadlifts and one leg DB deadlifts as you look for a new gym.

You don't *have* to deadlift to get bigger/stronger/<insert goal her>
A great exercise but not worth doing at the detriment of injuring yourself using a machine that forces you to use an unnatural body position.
Chin-Ups Pull-Ups Lat Pull-down (various grips) Cable Rowing (if you have access to such a thing) The deadlift variations Drew mentioned providing you have sufficiently heavy dumbbells.
Out of interest, are you able to work your legs at all without having use of a barbell?

I use the rack for squats and bench press, The only probelm i have with it is dead lifting as i can't keep the bar close to my body as it only lifts vertically.
