I speed frequently but safely....although when I first passed my test 10 years ago I speeded all over the place and dangerously, but only speed now when theres no kids about, not in town etc.

Another one of those bloody things i hate bout our driving system

Some people have the option of to take the 3 points and a £60 Fine or go on a speed awareness and slow down course!
How come i didnt get that option!! People are going to take the course as you dont get 3 points or a fine.
And even sometimes i was watching Rage wars i think it was on Sky three and some guy was caught Undertaking, speeding and tailgating on the motorway, the police pulled him over and all they gave him was a warning otherwise he cud of lost his job.

So much inconsitensy!!

Rant over

It depends on whether the police force where you got caught provides them. So luckily I got caught in Chorley, and Lancashire Police do offer it; whereas if I'd been near home it would have been GMP, and they'd have just whacked me with the points.

Also, you do have to pay for the course and it costs more than the fine, so you don't get off totally scott-free really. Think it was about £90 - so for £30 more than the fine I avoided the points, which I thought was worth paying. I can't get done in the next 3 years though or I think I end up getting a shedload of points.

That comment in itself shows just how ill-informed you are on the matter.

thats only a guideline it's not the law. you can give a ticket for 1mph over if you wished. so any appeal against that would be lost.

harsh!

I thought that too!!

The guideline issued by the Association of Chief Police Officers is not to prosecute unless you are going at 10% plus 2mph over the posted speed limit. In the case of a 50mph limit that would be 57mph, so you could have appealled against that.

There are tables which show the different speed limits.

Do you?YES

How often? Not all that ... couple of times a week.

What kind of roads? A roads & motorways. I Do try not to break the 30's but sometimes you just get right foot happy & find yourself speeding.

Have you been caught?I got pulled once by an unmarked car & got a verbal caution... I nearly kissed the copper when he let me off

That`s correct CASS, Cheshire in the past would do you for 1mph over the speed limit.

Sadly, all drivers over-estimate their driving skills.

This leads them to be over-confident at the wheel and take risks believing crashing to be an impossibility.

Add to this the prevalent driver's view that Britain's public roads are their own private race track.

Completely agree.

And sadly, people only really learn the limit of their ability when they exceed it. And the worse the consequences are, the more memorable the lesson.

eg at 17 drove into a back of a parked car, I was doing about 25mph. The black ice left me with no control. The very loud and unique sound of the impact has stayed with me to this day (16 years later) – since then, I have always kept a GOOD distance between me and the car in front, I hate people driving up my tail, and of course my driving behaviour has changed somewhat when its icey

yes i do speed, every car journey tbh, any kind of road (apart from through villages/towns and where there are any people on the pavement). been caught 2x on motorway journeys (once 50 mph in a roadworks speed limit of 40mph, the other time at 83mph)

What kind of roads? Most. Motorways, b-roads, around town

Have you been caught? No, not yet. Time will no doubt come though and I'll have to pay for it in someway or another. Its not a thing I'm proud of, nor do intentionally, just go at a speed I feel safe doing in whatever instance

to be honest....most accidents are caused by poor attention to the road, rather than speeding. speeding may worsen any crash, but it's very unusual for it to be the sole cause. several studies done on this, most easily found via google. from personal experience, i've had one near crash solely due to driving too fast (on a country road), but my actual crashes have been down to in-car multi-tasking/being tired/being inattentive.

i dont really think britain has poor road safety anyway - some of the safest roads in europe...which in themselves, are some of the safest in the world. the cost of making are roads perfectly safe (e.g. no accidents ever) are too high, in the form of:

- limits of speed of movement and it's impact on the economy
- govt. having too much control over civil liberties
