Hello everyone, just wondered if anyone had any advice for me as I have been traiing since January and seeing some results but I have extremely short wide lower legs and ankles even tho the rest of me doesn't appear wide. I have an hour glass figure up top in proportion but my legs are an issue. I know that it is probably just the way I was born but i just wondered if there was anyone out there who had the same problem who has been pleasently surprised with what can be achieved to tone them etc I need hope hahaha Also just wondered if anyone could shed any light on water retention in the ankles and lower legs coz sometimes it appears that I have it although i excercise 5 times a week and drink loads of water. Any ideas on how to try and get rid of it? Thanks for listening Kells xx

Welcome to MT Water retention can normally be controlled by loads of water and watching your salt intake..

Do you drink?Perhaps just at weekends? Is it actually water, or fat? What are your legs like in the morning when you wake up?Reason I ask is water tends to accumulate around ankles as a result of gravity when you sit or stand during the day. When I had bad water retention I would see evidence of it around my face and hands, this would then disappear during my day as my calves began to swell.

Hello, How are you? Thanks for the reply. I don't drink at weekends, I do on special occasions but very rarely cos I generally don't like the taste haha I was poking it today and to be honest i'm not sure it is water retention. I have just qualified as a nurse and when I was a student and came home from standing all day on a nursing shift my legs swell up quite badly but don't think I've ever noticed it around my hands but think they may be better in the morning first thing. Although its difficult to say as I have chunky calves and feet and not much ankle haha. From poking it i think it might just be a layer of fat. Its difficult to say as it feels hard but think thats coz my legs are quite solid and if it is fat its prob been there forever as I am 25 and only really taken exercise to a serious level since new year and half heartedly the year before. I had a personal training session today so think i'm just gonna continue hard cardio (spin class, running and cross training). I was doing weights but she added in some squats with a bar weight etc which was hard so hopefully it will make a difference in a few months. I will keep my eye on the swelling after a shift when I start my new job in june. In a way I hope it is fat as hopeully with hard work it will reduce. yipee!! Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks for replying. Kells x

You can usually tell if it's water retention because oedema will leave a slight indent if you poke hard. Your figure sounds very like a friend of mine who has a fabulous waist, hour glass figure but can't get boots to fit her for love nor money. She says they wont go over her chunky legs. There are a few things you could try. You could take the herb boldo and drink dandelion tea both of which are diuretic. Cut down on the carbs in your diet. Try massage with Avons lose an inch body streamlining lotion. OK they promise the earth and we all secretly know it's probably rubbish but clinical research says!..... and if nothing else it will get the old lymph flowing. A body wrap? Again they promise the earth... Try ankle rotations. It worked for Grandma! And finally cheat. They now do fake tan body contourig in which they spray different levels to create shading (saw it done on tv...not bad) And console yourself with the fact that one of the most staggeringly beautiful Italian actresses, Ornella Muti has really thick legs and ankles.

Aww thanks for the kind words and good tips! I've always fancied being wrapped in seaweed and cling film lol Is that wierd haha Yeah your friend does sound the same as me although lately I have foud boots but think thats prob just coz they are catering for different shapes more but I used to have big problems with boots. I am working really hard on my legs at the mo so I'm not expecting miracles but I will be happy when I see some real definition. That tan thing sounds facinating but they prob won't have that sort of thing in devon until 2020 haha I could try it myself with a bottle of puz bunn or something hehe. I will let you know when I see some progress and I am definately going to try the dandelion tea and the boldo coz i reckon it may help when my legs swell ater work hopefully. Much appreciated kells x

Ah! Water retention....the pain of my life!!! I have had problems with this on and off since my 1st pregnancy at 23 when my legs ballooooooned. Sometimes I can leave indentions going up my shin like a step ladder. I drink very little and salt intake is minimal and I excercise daily but at times, especially in warm weather I have water on my legs. HOWEVER last year we spent a month in New Zealand and it was pretty bloody warm, I was having a glass or wine nearly every night and we ate out quite alot so no salt control there and my legs were fine. We did however do LOADS of walking...not route marching...just walking around exploring places in no particular rush. About a month after we got back we got a dog...and yes I walk her loads. At least an hour a day on top of my cardio and I've found that my legs have been sooooooooo much better. If this warmish weather carries on I'll see if it has made any difference. I'm sure it's something I'll always have but hopefully will be able to control. Poke your finger onto your skin down to your shin, if the skin springs back when you release it's not water, if there is an indentation (as said above) when you take your finger away then it's retention. Not really sure how any of this helps....apart from getting a dog...but hey I waffle well!

Yes don't worry, you wont have to wait till 2020 or till Devon catches up. Buy a 1" angled paint brush. Apply one coat of fake tan all over. Leave one hour. Take angled paint brush (gives a lovely cut in when decorating) Apply 2nd coat of fake tan just on bits you would like to appear slimmer, contouring behind ankles, underneath calf muscles or ask an artist friend about the concept of light and shade. Et voila! Optical illusion of slimmer legs and without the humiliation of someone attacking you with a spray gun whilst you are wearing paper knickers! Oh and cheaper. Welshy. Apart from going back in time and changing your gene pool you could try Pilates which lengthens the muscles. And creative visualization. According to clinical trials!!!.....you can increase your height this way. I see no earthly reason why you can't just focus on your legs (remember to quit when you resemble a giraffe)
