Ive just started a new job where i work shifts, nights are 6pm-6am and days are 6am-6pm.
My shift pattern is 4 days, 3 nights and 4 days off followed by 3 days, 4 nights and 3 days off.
For aslong as i can remember my daily routine has been the same so this is going to throw my sleeping/eating/training pattern right out the window. I suppose when i get used to the pattern it'll be ok.

Do many of you work shifts, and how long did it take to adapt to the change?

I've worked shifts for years mate. I've done loads of different paterns over the years, some better than others but non of them really effected my training.Currently I'm doing 4 on 4 off which is pretty good for training and diet. Obviously it's night shifts that f*ck things up but you get used to it.

I used to work a shift pattern like that and hated it.
3 days 2 days 2 nights 3 nights 12hr shifts, it just seemed all I was doing was working. I took to it well and adjusted quickly but hated my body clock being messed up.

yeah i do, and it ain't the greatest thing. Fitting your diet round you shifts is hard work. it doesn't really effect my training too much, but i would love to be able to get more sleep. my body clock is so messed up it stupid.

I cant really get my head around the rota, a guy i work with said it works out that we work 21 days of the month, but looking at the rota and counting up each shift over a 4 week period it works out around 18 days per month - i think lol.

I work 3 main different shifts. 0700 - 1500, 1200-2200, and 2100 - 0700. Been doing these around 2 years and it still take me a couple of days each side of a **** change to properly get my body clock sorted, by then its shift change again!

so hang on, people work days, then nights with no break, THEN have a couple of days off?

surely it should be 2 day shifts, 2 days off, 2 night shifts, repeat?

Yeah that's one of the crap things about my shifts, we always finish on nights so my first day off i'll be getting home from a night shift and sleeping half the day.

Going from days to nights isn't too bad because you finish your days at 6pm then you aren't working again until 6pm the following night.

Dissoluteman - same with me luckily my place of work is a 5 minute drive from home so after nights i'll be in bed by 6.30am then i'll be up around 11-12.

I'm a doorman too, so with my shifts i can only work 2 weekends out of 3. I get home from the club at 5am and i'm at work at 5.45am ready to do a 12 hour shift lol.

I manage around 5 different shift patterns

4 shift conti on a 28 day rotation 24/7 cover
3 shift conti on a 21 day rotation mon-fri
3 shift standard (6-2, 2-10, 10-6)
double day (6-2, 2-10)
days (7-3.30)

I go on 3 shift standard this month - nice 30% premium so aint all that bad. we're trying to get all the men on this pattern, conti shifts are a waste of time, totally inefficient.

Also, only ever working days i always used to take certain supps/meds at set times throughout the day. Bit confusing now with my sleep/work pattern all over the place lol.
