Just curious how much protein most people on here eat?

I was watching this Milos Sarcev DVD, and planning a new diet plan for myself, and he was remarking how the minimum healthy level of protein anyone (including non-athletes) should eat is 1g per lb of bodyweight. He said as trainers, you could go up to 2g per lb and benefit from it.

Wondering what most people tend to use as their staple?

tristram -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 3 2008 18:19:48)

about 250g total regardless of weight.

Puzzle -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 3 2008 18:32:47)

The protein requirements of the massively muscular are far higher than your average Joe or Puzzle. 2g per pound is not necessary.

beefycol -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 3 2008 20:11:57)

aim for over 200g, so a gram to about 1-2lbs

I was thinking that 1g per 1lb lean mass should be enough as muscle needs the nutrients as fat doesnt, i dont know know the science behind this or poeple view on this but i tend to go for 1g per 1lb of bodyweight.

I reckon between 1-1.5g of total body weight is a good place to start. It seems to have worked well for me so far. But to be honest, its so dependent on other factors. It would depend on your stats, requirements and how your body responds. Even then, the amount could vary between induviduals.

Shyne -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 3 2008 23:21:10)

I normally have aroung 40g each meal so end up getting in atleast 300g protein per day @ 215lbs bw.

Has anyone ever gone from 1g to 2g's, or 2g's to 1g? Stark changes, and seen a difference in their results (i.e. recovery time, feeling of well-being, DOMS, stuff that could be classified as a possibly direct change resultant from the protein % change)?

2g per kg. If I wanted to increase my weight I'd go close to 3kg per kg simply by way of increased kcals.

Does anyone have any studies relating to protein amounts needed by training individuals compared to sedentry.

I study dietetics and seem to be facing a lot of resistance when talking about protein requirements in body building, people insistant on the low reccomended guidelines. I'd appriciate any help.

Look for work by Lemon and Tarnapolsky (spelling?). Lemon in particular will be a good start as he has written some nice review articles on the subject.

do you just include a portion of protein per meal, and use the portion method to work out approx carbs / fat / prot mix?

Just finished watching the Milos DVD on nutrition. He has very strong views on protein intake. It's pretty interesting, however his views on what protein intake *should* be are wayyyyy higher than I've ever read / heard before. He states that he personally, has around 500g of protein per day, in 8 meals, and 500g carbs.

JBRSS -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 4 2008 18:13:51)

I hover around 155-160, i roughly taking in something similar to my bodyweight somedays and when i can i throw in an extra 60g from shakes if i have time. So usually 1g-1.5g of protein per lb

zooma -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 4 2008 19:11:35)

Thanks for that iaink. Very helpfull. [sm=thumbsup.gif]

Lemon is about the best there is, and in his articles he does state that although the evidence from studies doesn't say strength athletes need more than 1.8g/kg, it may be the case that some do benefit from more

No, as I ahve said in numerous posts before, we eat food not figures. I don't count. I simply look at appropriate sources for each macro and advise on portions sizes. I am yet to be convinced that we need to count. Especially as food tables are way off anyway and are only estimates. See Claire's article on MT

cliff_vtr -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 5 2008 18:11:03)

I do not count, I just try to get a protein in as part of my meals. A rough estimate off the top of my head would be 100 - 120g per day

Jake -> RE: Protein per lb? (May 5 2008 18:16:45)

250-350g per day, don't really count tho.
