BencherRdg -> Decline Bench query (May 3 2008 19:48:01)

I've never done decline bench but heard somewhere thats its kinder on your shoulders? Is this true? Its just that i have an on going problem with my shoulder and even flat DB press seems to bother it.

Just wondered

Try it and you'll know [;)], it may be kinder i think but give it a go then you'll know (that rhymes lol)

Paul_UK81 -> RE: Decline Bench query (May 4 2008 16:10:49)

I injured my shoulder a few years back. I was keen to carry on training my chest and maintain my gains. The sports therapist who treated my shoulder told me to do decline bench press as it is less stressful on the shoulder. Once i had healed up a bit i went back to flat and then gradually increased my incline thereafter.

Perhaps try decline whilst your shoulders are bad and maybe get some treatment. I must admit that decline was not as effective as flat though.

I seem to struggle with my chest anyway (prob due to my weak shoulders).

I'll give it a go next week

scruffy -> RE: Decline Bench query (May 5 2008 18:08:45)

decline press is a great tricep and delt builder, because of the angle i find it is a lot easier on the delts than regular pressing on a flat bench,,, but everyone is different so try and see

BencherRdg -> RE: Decline Bench query (May 5 2008 20:20:36)

i'll def try it as long as is it still hits chest too could do with it hitting dlets and tri's too like [:D]

Yeah will mainly hit lower chest but also the middle of your chest

BronxBoy68 -> RE: Decline Bench query (May 5 2008 22:15:24)

I find declines quite easy to perform. I would suggest you give them a try for a few weeks. Hits my center and lower pecs area, an area I'm weak in.

can you actually tell me where your lower chest/ middle chest is, the pec major is one muscle and a muscle contracts as a whole,, so can you show me how your chest is split then ?

can you explain a bit more,how are there portions of the chest, the pec major is one muscle, so how can this be portioned up ?????

Ak_88 -> RE: Decline Bench query (May 6 2008 17:31:03)

Chest consists of two muscles; Pectoralis Major (Sternal) and Minor (Clavical) heads.

Both are activated when performing bench-movements however the extent various slightly depending on the incline or decline you use.

Decline and flat activate the Sternal head to a greater degree, Incline increases Clavicular activation.

There is no inner, outter, upper, lower chest. It is one muscle, that contracts as one muscle.

Icemansoldier -> RE: Decline Bench query (May 6 2008 19:03:00)

Fair enough [:)], but many people have problems when building up there chest, eg they may lack muscle at the bottom of there chest, there decline or flat would develop that, you know what i was getting at anyway.

the chest will be worked as a whole, depending on the gentic make up this will determine where most growth will occur....there are so many people who believe you can isolate only part of a muscle which is not possible,,,

My view is Flat hits the chest all round mainly middle, incline hit mainly upper and a little of middle, decline hit lower and abit of middle, you get my drift.

this is the point i am making, a muscle will contract of not, you cant make half a muscle contract from different areas, so how can it hit upper, middle or lower, if you stretch a true elastic band does it stretch uniform ?
