you shouldnt have to train on set days. train when your body has recovered. Very true, and good in principle, but as most of aint sitting round the house 100% of the time getting bored, working to a 7 day regime dose the job. Secondaly training for atheltic purposes generally means fitting training around your events/games and therefore can not be left to vagaries of whether your feel like training or not. Also how do you know if you are recovered? Or is this a personal, instinctive thing? For what it's worth, and I am not sure why this is really of interest as everyone has different goals, but; Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri and Sat with some variation.

Also how do you know if you are recovered? Or is this a personal, instinctive thing? i have spoken to a dr of exercise biochemistry and former strength coach who said that you are strongest on the day you have fully recovered and each day after that, your strength decreases. so to find out your average recovery time takes some trial and error to begin with, but once you know roughly how long it takes, you should make quick progress. obviously you will not be as strong prior to full recovery either. the method i use to find my recovery time is to choose a full body workout, find my max reps at a weight and come back after a certain number of days recovery. i would start at 1 day recovery, then 2, then 3 etc until i find a day that anything beyond does not produce the same increases. workout 1 1 day rest workout 2 1 week rest to start fresh workout 1 2 days rest workout 2 1 week rest etc it can take a month or two, but your strength would have increased in that time and the results there after will be optimum. (stress, lack of sleep etc can set you back an extra day or two in recovery)

M/W/F - but I change the order round when my shoulder aches. For example, week 1: M - pull, W - Legs, F - Push Week 2 may be: M - Legs W - Pull F - Push to give my shoulder enough recovery between days...OR, if I have a dodgy hamstring 1 day or something, I'll give it another couple of days rest and move a day forward and swap it with another day. I work all weekend, so can't get to the gym.
