If you don't want to develop strength and power in the lower limbs then I don't think squating (back, front etc..) is necessary. For many strength and power sports squating is an important assitance exercise.

equally , certain sports are arguably more likely to benefit from leg press than squat

Hi, sorry I am late.

There is more to life and more to training than squatting.

The sooner people understand this, the sooner we will not see elitist "OOH LOOK AT ME I AM DOING THE SQUATS THING! WHY ARENT YOU?" threads like this which pop up on a regular basis on www.muscletalk.co.uk

Could no be arrrrrrrrrrsed to read the ast 6 pages, so don't know what's been going on, but here's my contribution:

Yes i squat, front squat/back squat/deep squats/parallel squats/box squat.

I purely HATE squatting, but it's given me big legs and i think it's added even more thickness to my lumbar region.

I don't agree with all of that 'squat or rot', 'real men squat' bollocks. But i do think they have the ability to put more muscle on a frame than any other exercise.

The Ozzie track team use the 45 deg leg press almost exclusively.

Whoever said doing squats takes off muscle from the upper body needs shooting.

Before I started doing squats I didnt put muscle on my top half as fast I have been now im doing squats.

My ass is absoloutely huge beyond belief but the fact I can squat so much compared to any other compound movement is an awesome feeling I LOVE IT!

I Squat, has been over 3 months and have started to do really deep squats.

Squats (if done properly) do the whole of your legs and i find that for the next 3-4 days your quads, hams, glutes all have mad doms. This is NEVER the case with just doing the odd leg press. You have to train each leg muscle seperately to get a decent leg workout done.

Didn't used to like them but they are now a part of my training routine for legs and look forward to doing them as I always try and do compounds over isolate exercises.

Squatting is the most fun that you can have standing up. It is the most fantastic exercise, on every level.

Over many years of training I have met many people who half squatted, quarter squatted or didn't squat at all. But very few do proper depth squats.

I have also heard almost every excuse for not doing them. But it seems to break down as - people who do them correctly all love them and people who won't or don't do them correctly - hate them and invent an excuse as to why they don't. But that is all it is - an excuse, because the people with the excuses know in their hearts that they should be squatting, and squatting correctly
