Can I ask where you got those stats from Tom?

Assuming they're correct, there's a case there for doing partials to develop the quads over hams/glutes.
And other than more glute activation, I can't see any real benefit for going A-T-G.

Although saying that, I can't actually think of anyone I've seen training partials with particularly developed legs at all - quads or hams.

Sorry guys i have no idea where i found it. I came across it over a year ago and saved it on m comp.

Just to add. In the gym i quite often see the athletes (usually track and field and some rugby lads) doing partial squats - these people have VERY well developed legs. Saying that they also do OH squats, lunges, pulls from the floor........

There needs to be figures for absolute values of activation (as represented by IEMG) to accuratly interpret the above data. These relative (%) values mean little without them, i.e. if the overall activation was greater in a deeper squat a decreased % contribution form the quad muscles may still mean have resulted greater activation compared to the partial squat. This may not be the case but without further data from the study the % data does not tell the complete story.

It is quite obvious that without significant hip flexion during the eccentric phase there will be less activation of hip extensors.

Interesting figures Tom.

The Vastus Medialis recruitment from a 1/4 squat is the reason why many people who have had knee surgery, like myself, have them in their recovery, after 6 months or so, as they recruit the Medialis quite well, without putting undue stress on the knee.

The Vastus Medilias atrophies quite badly following any form of knee surgery.

As Iain said, without universal definitions of what parralell is it's quite hard to interpret the data.

That said there are so many studies on thigh muscle activation when manipulating squat variables, very easy to get wrapped up in it and become anal.

I am sure I have seen one study which defined a 'full' squat as 90 degrees flexion at the knee!!! In most this equates to a half squat!

very common to see the weight racked up far too high on 'half squats'
