How do you know when you're eating too much food?

I've been looking at some of the articles on nutrition and it all seems so much! I don't think I could eat that much without putting on a considerable amount of fat.

They never really specify if the diets are for people over or under a certain weight or age. You're BMR would be significantly different if you're a 75kg 30 year old compared to a 90 kg 20 year old.

Currently I don't eat as much as that, and I guess my gains have been slow, but it's not like I've not been gaining...

You know you're eating too much when you gain weight too quickly (say more than 0.5lb a week ignoring the first week's glycogen & water weight gains). Monitor and adjust accordingly.
