Hi all, First off, well done for this forum - its been a great source of information for me when I started out doing some weights about 3 weeks ago. Now ... I have a couple of newbie questions: 1. My triceps and chest muscles feel sore ONLY when I stretch them (when I don't stretch them they're fine). Last time I did a workout on these muscles was about eight days ago. Do you think I should wait till they are totally OK or is it safe to go ahead and work out these muscles? 2. Are nuts the best option for snacking? They are very high in fat. Any other alternatives? Cheers, Alan.

First off welcome to the MT site. I wouldnt worry overly about snacking on nuts..provided they arent salted. Raw nuts (i.e unsalted) such as cashew, walnut, brazil etc are good sources of healthy fats. Dont fall into the trap of media hype about fat is bad....they always fail to highlight that not ALL fats are bad. Nuts and seeds such as sunflower, flax etc are great sources of Essential Fatty Acids or EFA's and these are essential for good body function and for the joints. They will not make you FAT. Ok that being sorted we can get onto this: "1. My triceps and chest muscles feel sore ONLY when I stretch them (when I don't stretch them they're fine). Last time I did a workout on these muscles was about eight days ago. Do you think I should wait till they are totally OK or is it safe to go ahead and work out these muscles? " Depends on what kind of soreness. If its balls to the wall all out pain..as in you ..may have torn a muscle or underlying ligaments and connective tissue etc then go and get it checked out. Better to play it safe than ego it out and end up worse off. But that said if its just that dull throb soreness or DOM's (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) then go ahead and train. That said i've not known DOM's to last 8 days from my own personal experience. Has it been gettin less sore as the days have gone by??

Hi Mortimer. I would say that its more of a dull throbbing soreness - definitely not sharp pain. The reason it has lasted for so long might be because I really pushed those two sets of muscles last time round and I am just starting out. I will continue my workout tomorrow and stop immediately if something feels funny. Thanks for your help! Alan.
