ThaiFighter -> How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 18:24:55)

Although I'm usually a massive supporter of all things American...this made me go "huh?"

I was reading the IMDB gossip section, and some Disney actress recently took a picture that a lot of people in the US recon is really obscene and rude - so much so, she's had to publicly apologise and do the whole "I regret it" thing.

Now....here's the picture:

So why was such a stink kicked up about this photo? Well, the girl is 15.

Do you think such a big stink would get kicked up here? I mean....does anyone here think this is a rude and obscene picture?

America has gun crime, starts wars etc but they do still seem to get upset over the stupidest of things.

I find nothing wrong with that photo

Its religion that has made them go crazy over that picture. I think lots of christian people over here would be quite shocked at a 15 year old showing her bare back!

Titch -> RE: How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 18:36:48)

Thank god she didn't expose her ankles.

Thank god you didn't say 'ankles' on an American forum!!

It's not obscene and had she been over 18 I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

I can't image my parents being overly impressed if I had posed for that picture at 15, it's just not really apprpriate.... not enough to kick a massive fuss over though.

drab4 -> RE: How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 18:44:20)

I don't think that picture is rude or obscene. Those are strong words and obviously not applicable here

And I'm not puritanical in the least

However, in a country where the age of consent is in some states as high as 18, a picture of a partially clothed and heavily made up 15 year old pouting at the camera could be seen as somewhat distasteful. This is understandable. Not obscene, but distasteful

Likewise, recent changes have seen a ban on catwalk models under the age of 16 here in the UK

I think that many people are just uncomfortable seeing kids who are under the age of consent posing in anything which remotely resembles a sexual nature

So, I understand the furore

No, but it is a sexual photo of an underage girl. I can understand why there is an outcry about it.

If by eloquent you mean overly long and rambling, then I agree with you, I'm quite the rambler

H20 -> RE: How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 19:08:22)

If she is under the care and control of her parents then I think it is they who should look at themselves, assess the decision that was made and apologise.

I don`t find it obscene, but there are people out there who will enjoy it ( don`t wish to take it slightly OT TF and I`ll edit that last bit if you request mate).

Yep - we have a tabloid press after all.

ThaiFighter -> RE: How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 19:47:43)

Is that picture really sexual?

I'm not an arty person, but to me it looks more like one of the pictures / paintings you see in a gallery than the sort of picture you see gracing Nuts or Loaded.

H20 -> RE: How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 20:01:38)

I think it`s the age for most people TF, she`s the same age as my youngest daughter, I wouldn`t let her do it and I wouldn`t want people looking at her in this way, it is meant to be provocative imo and as the age of consent is 16 in our country and she is under that I think we are accustomed to drawing the line there, if she`d been 17-18 I probably wouldn`t see it this way with the above in mind.

JohnKerr2 -> RE: How puritanical can you get? (May 5 2008 20:12:07)

You really can't underestimate the power of the Christian neo-conservative lobby in the US. They get more and more powerful by the day.

Last year Gallup did a survey of Americans on, "Who would you vote for to be President?"

Less than half indicated that they would be prepared to vote for an atheist president.

I wasn't aware Nuts and Loaded where a byword for sexual photos[;)] It's a good photo, quite a cut above what lads mags trade in but she is still underaged. She also works for Disney and is a major star in their 'wholesome' products. That is a large part of the reason for the stink.

Do you need to be a christian neo-conservative to not approve of underage girls being photographed in a sensual maner?
