DaveyL -> Leg curls (May 5 2008 19:43:21)

Just remembered I need to ask about this. My legs are the strongest part of my body, and as such I am now doing reps with the maximum weight for the leg curl machine, what can I do to keep getting stronger? It's always satisfying to get to maximum weight on the machine, don't do it much, only managed the leg press so far but hey. I have got another month(i estimate) till I can do 3 sets of 10 reps till failure. Higher reps than I normally do, but 6 reps is a little easy,

Dave

MMA Guy -> RE: Leg curls (May 6 2008 8:04:31)

stiff leg deadlifts

TREBOR -> RE: Leg curls (May 6 2008 8:11:27)

How much weight is on the stack?

DaveyL -> RE: Leg curls (May 6 2008 9:59:09)

It's got 100kg on the stack. I figure it's a lighter machine in the gym I go to, it's not got any serious people training in it that I have seen.

I may give SLDL a go, only issue is my grip goes before my back on normal deadlifts so I'm wondering if it will be the same problem with the SLDL.

Switch to SLDL mate as MMA said. IMO they are a superior movement. Thats not defininitive of course but i far and away prefer the SLDL.

For strength sldl but for ham development leg curls are much better choice.

Davey you can make ham curls harder by raising your upper body up off the bench.

Wayne Cowdrey -> RE: Leg curls (May 6 2008 15:12:33)

Maybe use one leg?

Yes, it is satisfying to "stack" a machine. I have yet to come across a shoulder press machine or a chest press machine that I can't "stack", and I don't even train chest!

I actually prefer the SLDL for ham development as it engages the full span of the ham which stretches from the glutal area all the way down to insertion behind the knee. Ham curls only engage a portion of the hamstrings.

Wayne Cowdrey -> RE: Leg curls (May 7 2008 14:01:13)

I don't think leg curls give you much in the way of 'useful' strength. Training leg curls probably just makes you better at doing leg curls.

I find that deep squatting hits all my leg muscles, including hamstrings.

DaveyL -> RE: Leg curls (May 7 2008 15:26:42)

Would curls not make you better at running, since that is one of the things hamstrings help out on. Any strength increase in a similar rang of motion to running can't be all bad.

I don't think they would.

Running will make you better at running! I imagine sprinters use compound movements (squats, cleans, etc) to improve leg power.

Integra -> RE: Leg curls (May 7 2008 16:38:18)

I have seen some US sprinters leg curling as part of their routine.

DaveyL -> RE: Leg curls (May 7 2008 19:10:29)

Surely it would help too. Say you can bench press 100kg, benching 50kg would be much easier and you could probs go for longer than someone who can only bench 60kgs. SO strengthenin the muscles you run with would help, No????

Wayne Cowdrey -> RE: Leg curls (May 8 2008 12:14:31)

If you took 2 identical twins, with equal running ability, and got one of them to train JUST leg curls for a few weeks, would they then be any faster at running than their untrained twin? I don't think they would. There are many muscles involved in running.

In my opinion leg curls are more of a bodybuilding type exercise, with minimum 'useful' carry-over.

I might be totally wrong though!

DaveyL -> RE: Leg curls (May 8 2008 14:34:46)

I do remember seeing some research, the control group just ran, while the other group had some weight training sessions built into their routine. Ok, not leg curls by themselves but full body I think. After 2 months the group doing weights had made a 12% better gain than just the runners. Only thing is, I don't know what exercise routine they were doing. Something that would be interesting to test i must admit. My instinct is that leg curls would make you run faster and longer than the same routine with just cardio but not sure we can really answer that question unless someone knows of a study [:@]

p.s. I'm right [8|]

Wayne Cowdrey -> RE: Leg curls (May 9 2008 10:38:00)

There's no doubt that the right sort of weight-training would improve sprinting ability. Sprinters tend to look very muscular. If I was training for sprinting though, leg curls wouldn't appear in my routine! I'd focus on - squats, power cleans, running against a resistance (uphill and/or dragging a weight), standing high jumps (maybe holding light dumbells)!

Glad SLDL work for you mate they do diddly squat for me development wise.

Deffinately agree with this. Someone wanting to improve sprinting performance would be better off training in a manner thats specific to the reuirements of sprinting. Sled pulls/sprints or powerchute sprints, explosive squatting and power cleans...Plyometrics. The same goes for any sport..in order to build a training routine you need to make is sports specific.

Agree'd Trebor. Its the old "one size fits all" adage coming into play...me and you both know that what works for one guy might not work for the next....as in this case where we have seen better results from two completely different exercises. The main thing is you know what works for you which is half the battle right? How is your training going right now anyways mate?

DaveyL -> RE: Leg curls (May 9 2008 19:40:36)

I don't doubt that there are more effective sports specific training that would benefit running and sprinting more, but I reckon leg curls, squatting and calf raises may help too. Luckily I'm not springing at the moment, although am looking for a form of cardio.
