Some people are just ignorant. As someone has said, manners don't cost a thing. I kicked off at a boss at work last week as I waited and held a door only for him to walk through without saying a word. It's a good job he didn't know me!!

Kicked off? What did you say to this boss?

I usually smile and give a sarcastic thank-you, which seems to confuse them

^^ I normally just say "It's okay, I'm a concierge and do this for a living."

Still doesn't get a "thanks" or acknowledgement, mind you.

My thinking is some people just have strange behavious drawn to them. I experience lack of manners, inconsideration, rudeness on a daily basis but not to the level shown to you (Righty).
Plus there's all the goings-on at your gym.

Maybe I'm naive but I realise the type of behaviour you mention is far more frequent these days, I just haven't seen it to that extent.

Although saying that, a friend of mine used to tell me about all the car crashes he saw, quite often happening around him. I've never seen a full-on car crash so I could deduce from my limited experience they don't happen that often

Keith, while I agree people are definitely getting ruder, they are pretty extreme examples and ones which I seldom come across in the circumstances you describe.

Saying that though, my ex did attract this kind of rudeness, bless her, always when I wasn't around though

Basically if you think its bad now, its only going to get worse

In Bristol what you just said is standard. Everyone is stressed to the max!

The depressing thing is when I used to work all over the UK doing contract flooring, you would get nice areas and bad areas but the majority were pretty crud. Most people all said the same thing aswell wherever I travelled and that was 'this country is the pits'.

Traffic does my nut in which is why I got a moped, fair enough people may think 'look at that sad bar steward 21 and driving a moped', but hey do I get stuck in traffic? Do i spend shedloads on petrol?

I used to work as a barman (in a social club) a while back and the customers were a right bunch of tossers, I'd understand if I was working in a busy town centre but this was a quiet, local area.

Made me realise that whenever I order a drink form the bar, I am very well-mannered.....it doesnt hurt to use a 'please' or a 'thank you' !

I'll try and keep this briefish.

I think we just accept rudeness, discourtesy, etc in this country as part of everyday life. I become more aware of it when I go abroad for a few days, experience far more politeness and courtesy there than I do here, and then come back to the 'British way'.

Why does it happen? Breakdown of the family unit. The evolution of the 'greed is good' culture of the '80s. We're less of a society than we were 20 or 30 years ago, we're just lots of individuals who happen to live in the same place but have little regard for others.

Not wanting to get religious (and I'm not, btw) but the demise of the church, Sunday School, and religious teaching at junior school level leaves people without any moral compass. If you don't believe in anything, why is it wrong to steal, injure, or kill?

The crime now doesn't seem to be doing the deed, but getting caught.

Similar but different, when I'm out dog walking my two young dogs like to run up to other dogs and say hello, as dogs do. Nine of of ten owners stop to have a chat, we pat each others dogs, etc. But there's always the miserable, mean-spirited one in ten that comes out with 'can't you keep your fcuking dogs under control' that you just can't talk to. It happened last Saturday with one guy whose dog ran up to mine!

ok i have just returned a few weeks ago from Central America. People here are in a different league to over there. We are generally more friendly and polite (when not intoxicated).

Latin American folk, especially the indigenous ones are vile. Some experiences i've had as follows:

Bang their car door onto my car parked at the supermarket

Never ever give you way from a junction, your stuffed basically if its rush hour

Never hold doors open for you, happily walk in front of you and then close the door behind

Mother stands at the check out while kid runs around shopping, then when its time to check out she asks to wait while the kid finishes.

Nearly run over a million times walking on the curb.

Invasion of workout space at the gym, fat nasty women banging into me whilst doing my reps.

no manners at all basically. I'm glad im back.

That'll teach 'em.

People are rude because they want things NOW, want to get to places NOW and need a slap NOW.

I accept that totally. I was trying to make a complex point briefly and probably didn't express myself as well as I could have. My point is that if you don't give people a moral compass at an early age - whether that comes from home, school, church or somewhere else - then they haven't got a basis for determining right from wrong. Manners is a small part of that much larger picture. If you have no respect for the rights of others, why should you bother being polite to them?

I have to say James, things like this were a rarity when I lived in Kettering, Gloucester, Cheltenham etc etc but seem to be normal life in Peterborough.

Ahh, that would explain it. Ghastly area that I make a point of avoiding.

You had me laughing out loud though with your first post, I could just envision four really pissed off guys getting out of their vans cars and laying into the irreverent cow. Amazed you didn't just sit on her until the police came though, you could get away with that if she was fleeing the scene of an accident and likely under the influence of intoxicating substances... for your own protection obviously

It has nothing to do with stress, nor urgency, it's simply people having a very poor sets of moral values.

Its the way society is moving if you ask me. People are becoming increasingly selfish and hardnosed, it almost seems like a survival mechanism some people have built into them. Of course it all comes crashing down when somebody decides to confront them, i have a female friend whos exactly like this. Will talk a big game, slag people off, be inconsiderate but when confronted, loses all of the nerve.

It WILL get worse, as people realise there are people out there like this and are on the recieveing end of their bullshit. They too become hardnosed, selfish and inconsiderate as a result. Vicious cycle.

I hate it when people do this. I often say 'YOU'RE WELCOME' in a loud and sarcastic voice

Selfish, inconsiderate behaviour IMO is a symptom of this kind of 'Apprentice' mentality that seems to be becoming the norm. People thinking that they're number one, the centre of the universe, and anyone who gets in their way, well who cares about them?

I wonder if this is a geographical thing.

I come from a town in SW Scotland where most people are pretty vile; their default setting is rude, inconsiderate, abusive, nasty and uncharitable - (Or at least they were in the time I grew up there. I can't imagine things are any better now - I haven't been there in well over a decade).

I now live in East London and I'm always amazed by how nice people are on a general day to day basis. I think it might partly be because the Bangladeshi community have raised the atmosphere and seem to value good manners, kindness and warmth so much more.
