rightyho -> Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 11:04:09)

I'm training a young girl up so she has the physical presence and ability to join the police service.

She's put on 7lb so far, which is needed as she's quite underweight for her 6-feet height.

Her strength has more than doubled in most areas over the course of two months and she's progressing very nicely.

Just wondering if someone could tell me, accurately, the strength test requirements for entry. I believe there's a pull, a push and a leg lift?

Her bleep test won't be a problem.

Thanks.

CASS -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 11:05:59)

yep in most forces it's a push and pull test, plus a grip strenght test (which is a good overall indication of body strenght).

all forces will vary a bit in what they will have as a fitness test. but basicly they all revolve around simular tests.

Cheers CASS.
I have her doing grip work routinely as well now - just thought it would be helpful. She's gone from gripping a pair of 5kg plates for about 10 seconds, to managing a pair of 15kg ones for maybe 30 seconds. She's working really, really hard.

I think she'll be strong enough to have a bash now - she has an interview in eight weeks time. She's not old enough until then.

CASS -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 11:22:20)

great, good luck to her, it sounds like from the effort she has clearly put in, that she would be suited to the job well and would also do well in it.

also to note they will test back flexablity also, normally by your feet being held down or locked down and then pushing forward against a measurment board to see how flexable you are.

edit: just to add if she holding the 15kgs for 30 odd sections she'll have no problems with the grip test

Cambridgeshire. I think Lincolnshire is her second choice.
She's a good kid - her mum's been a member of the gym for years and has brought her up properly to be respectful, etc.
I'm just a bit worried she isn't tough enough - mentally or physically - just yet to take service in her stride.
There's a sergeant at my gym who is now off with stress with some of the things he's experienced lately - and having listened to some of it, I'd be off with stress, too. [&:]

Mikewats -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 11:47:00)

its about 35kg on a push and pull, but they're machine weights so easier. With a bit of training it should be very easy.

She's Smith machine benching 35kg for 10 at the moment and seated rowing 40kg for 10 also, so sounds like she's at the right point according to your figures. I'd like to increase both of her lifts by another 50 per cent though, just for real-world application.

Thanks for the info mate. [:)]

CASS -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 12:01:53)

it's less than that mate

CASS -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 12:03:12)

yea it can be tough at times to be honest. at times i think it can certainly pick out those you can cope with almost anything and those that can't. but only time i will tell

swift -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 12:11:03)

my stepmum is in northants police.

it isnt very difficult from what she told me.

i think there is a press-up, sit-up and bleep test.

CASS -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 12:19:30)

press up and sit ups aren't in most fitness tests to get in now (in most forces that is)

they have much easier tests than that now

popeye_wannabe -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 12:23:20)

what level on the bleep test, i really need to start getting a grip on my physic havent trained for nearly 2 weeks crappy diet, i just feel like a fatty

ps i cant even put my trainers on without breaking out in the sweats

daveyboy8181 -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 14:37:54)

most forces vary slightly
mine is
35kg push over an average of 3 (2warm up 3 max = 5 reps)
35kg pull over an average of 3 (2warm up 3 max = 5 reps)

bleep test level 5.3
(do a warm up to level 3, stretch out then start again having to hit 5.3)

no grip test

Noddie -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 14:45:41)

daveyboy - that's exactly the same as Thames Valley Police. Northants is pretty similar - in fact they all are these days. Expecting much strength from people was determined to be "sexist" as the typical woman has less upper-body strength than the typical man - I realise that may not be the case on this forum.....

It itsn't hard to pass. What will screw you up is if your BMI is too high or too low. Don't ask me why they bother since there is no in-service requirement, unless you join a specialist unit like firearms. Anyway your chances of sucessfully running after someone when you're wearing a stab vest, utility belt, radio, CS, Batton, boots, NATO pullover, helmet, paperwork and a tonne of other crap are next to bugger-all and you'll probably have a car and radio to hand as well....

daveyboy8181 -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 14:51:29)

firearms is 9.4 bleep test
support unit 10.5 bleep test
evidence gatherer 11 bleep test
from what i last remember

a friend of mine was told she needed to bring her bmi down by 3%, she went back 3 months later and reduced it by 5. not sure what the threshold is for bmi tho

CASS -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 15:04:04)

beep test for us is 7 minutes for everyone

10 minutes for firearms

Change that. Look up grip dynometers. Nowt like what you have her doing. Rack pulls, partial deadlifts, dumbbell holds for time are more similar.

This is rarely reflected in the slating they sometimes get on here but like other services from time to time you get to deal with some real ****. Dead babies and the like are right up there. There is no test of moral fortitude and character but along with fitness it is a requirement.

kinglean -> RE: Strength requirements for woman in police (May 7 2008 21:41:05)

I believe they use this mate.

http://www.concept2.co.uk/dyno/

I too trained a female up for this test but it was about 18 months ago.

35k rings some bells [:D]

She passed by the way and i remember thinking she was not hugely strong and might struggle. (Work ethic in the gym was not great either)
