GeorgeCee -> Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 16:23:34)

Why?

I don't understand the reason for putting simple carbs in a PWO shake. I know it helps refill those depleted glycogen stores, but what's the point in that? I'm never so tired after a work out that I need it.

If there's another reason please tell me!

dazc -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 16:31:08)

its not to give you energy mate, its to help get the body started on repairing and building up the muscles

GeorgeCee -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 16:35:50)

So how does the sugar do that?

Please be complex as possible...I'm a budding biochemist

dazc -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 16:38:47)

ill leave it to someone else to answer then, i know how it does it but there are quite a few mechanisms at work, and im not technical enough to explain it fully and guarantee i get everything 100% accurate.

it does work though [:D]

DisposableHero -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 16:46:45)

I was told that if you're not bulking, just maintaining, which is what I'm doing now, it's not that beneficial. True/false?

Nigeepoo -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 18:14:45)

If you feel O.K. after a workout, you don't need fast carbs PWO if you're maintaining or cutting. Having a lot of muscle glycogen aids muscle growth (don't ask me why, ask Lyle McDonald!) so it's good for bulking.

Glycogen stores are not relative to central fatigue.

David Barr -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 18:39:57)

Glycogen isn't so much about the perception of fatigue as it is the ability to perform optimally.

For non-athletes, PWO carbs and glycogen are grossly overrated compared to other supplements/nutrition (like protein).

what are your guys thoughts on myth no. 5 which states that u will get better results if u wait up to 30 minutes and consume your PWO shake than if u would drink it straight away.....which I'm sure most of us do!

i would agree, but then again i go up to 1 hour after training with weights to have my PWO meal (not shake). some good stuff on Mr Barr's site i have to admit

dazc -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 20:39:50)

sorry i disagree, based on nothing other than after i have hammered the weights my body is crying out for nutrition.

what scientific reason could there be for it being better to wait to have some protein to give the muscles the aminos they need, along with some carbs to help carry them there, and give your body fuel so it can use the protein for what you want it for rather than for fuel

what reason would there be to have a meal an hour later rather than a shake when your body is neither amino nor glycogen void? i doubt stomach contents would be entirely empty anyway. Out of curiosity how do you know your body is crying out for nutrition at that precise second?

i dont know mate, i just feel hungry, and my body just feels like it needs food! cant really explain it!

just logically it seems like it should be the sooner the better for getting some nutrients into your system

I have a meal an hour later as well by the way

i could be wrong, im really no expert in nutrition by any means so im always interested in hearing different opinions!

theiopener -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 22:07:18)

i see, i feel hungry for about 5 minutes then it goes away, i have a large meal when i get home for PWO as i found that a PWO shake made me want to chew my arm off even with just whey in it

Then again i aint as heavily muscled as you are too [:D]

I think personally if the body is screaming out for nutrients perhaps the almost nutrient void shake with sugars could be replaced with something just as fact acting but more nutritionally sound as it would make sense in addition to flooding the body with aminos and carbs to also flood it at the same time with vitamins and minerals (question and opinion)

dazc -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 22:45:52)

maybe it would, im not sure on that! id give it a go for a few months, but i dont really want to run experiments with me as the subject at the moment! lol

theiopener -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 7 2008 22:46:12)

fair dues Daz [:D]

what scientific reason could there be for it being better to wait to have some protein to give the muscles the aminos they need, along with some carbs to help carry them there, You don't need carbs to carry AAs to your muscle cells as whey produces an insulin spike. and give your body fuel so it can use the protein for what you want it for rather than for fuel. After a workout, your muscles will be burning fats.

danchubbz -> RE: Dextrose in PWO Shake? (May 8 2008 8:48:00)

Personally I do push myself hard when I do weights and even though I do not have any scientific backing I listen to my bosy I think a quich dex/whey shake is beneficial to me immidiately after my session.

When he mentions the pre-workout meal to enhance protein synthesis during your session could someone help him break that down a bit more clearly as what falls under pre-WO. For example I eat a complex carb and protein meal (Usually something like a sweet potato, chicken and brocolli) about 60-90 minutes before I train would this "qualify" or is there too long a gab?

Does he mean a type of carb and whey drink being drunk as your arriving at the gym for best results?

The most alarming thing I took from that was the fact that 2 PWO drinks are more beneficial.

I train at 7am, so does that mean I'd be ok taking a protein shake at say 8am, then another at 10am and not eating til 12pm?

well with him saying that having your PWO immidiately is a bad thing I guess in his eyes your PPWO shake would be your PWO shake...does that make sense?!?!?
