Hi guys,

I posted a thread a while back about cutting my body fat: http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/m_2525935/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#2525935

The diet was similar to the thread above although there was obviosuly variations in the meals, i.e. beef/turkey/fish instead of chicken etc. I ate some fruit, mostly apples and some strawberries and bananas and added some yoghurts (Muller Light approx. 100 cal). I also used fish oil to get some Omega 3's and that.

On this diet and a good addition of extra cardio (5-a-side football/fasted AM cardio approx 5-6.5 miles/HITT on bike and treadmill) I've lost over a stone and I'm happy with how I'm looking and feeling but now it's time to bulk soon I think. I've been recovering from a boxers fracture and it's been about 8 weeks since the injury but I'm going to give it another 3-4 weeks to recover fully before any heavy weights so I will continue with the cardio and light weights / body weight exercises.

My query is, when going from a cut to a bulk should I stagger the increase in calories or just go for it full pelt.

I'm 5 foot 7-5 foot 8 and weight approx 140lbs with around 11% body fat according to my scales, which may ormay not be accurate but I've come down to 11% body fat from around high 16% body fat. I've lost a little muscle mass - nothing major but this would be mainly due to the stopping of weight training after hurting my knuckle.

I'm eating around 1800 - 1900 calories most days and have a cheat meal once a week, usually Friday night chinese takeaway or fish and chips as well as usually eating a few more carbs on the weekend to help with the metabolism. Do you think it would be wise to go from 1900 calories right to 3000 calories for a Bulk?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, I've naively bought some Thermobol from Maximuslce a few months ago but haven't used it in cutting - should I use this for the last few weeks of cutting before changing to a bulk? I haven't needed it with the diet and training doing the trick but maybe it couldn't hurt to use it for an extra push against the fat?

I don't see why not. Just eat, monitor and adjust accordingly to gain ~0.5lb a week.

sounds good Nige. Is 0.5lb a week the optimum amount to put on weekly?

up the portion sizes slightly and see where you go mate, keep cardio in the regime and just mess around with portion sizes thats all. When it comes time to cut again drop them slightly, easy

You'll be lucky to gain more than 0.5lb a week of muscle mass so any weght gain beyond that is going to be mostly fat mass.

to be completely honest if you have been training for more than a year then adding 1lb per month of fat free mass is absolutely fantastic

I have been training about 19 months and if i gain 6lb of muscle before next summer i will be over the moon

Well, for the first while I think it will be hard to measure actual muscle gains as there will be an increase in food and likely water.

6lb doesn't sound that much over a year. I'm only coming in around 140lbs and would hope I can add a good bit more on my first bulk but maybe I'm being unrealistic. I'd love to achieve 160lbs by Christmas at approx 10% body fat. Thats 20lbs. Sounds a bit optimistic now from your advice but it can't hurt to give it a go. Aim for a stars and you might reach the sky and all that. :p

160lbs is doable as you aint gonna gain 20lbs of muscle but around probly 12-14 with increased glycogen storage and increased water id say easy 160 by Xmas mate, if you do it right

yeah i read it mate and look at his stats, hes not carrying as much lean tissue as you or i so progress will be achievable IMO for his current stats

even at 12% BF he will still be in reasonable condition but as muscle goes on his BF level will go down so he will put some fat on to balance out the ratio as if he put on 14 lbs of lean tissue and no fat his BF would be lower then when he started

i think once he gets to 160 progress will slow, but its achieveable

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies. I appreciate your comments and time taken to reply.

I'm hoping to give it a good shot. Either way, I know progress is longer than 6 months or even 12 months. It's a lifetime thing.
