Skelator -> Smith Machine Squats...Love 'em or hate 'em?? (May 7 2008 17:27:05)

Hi Guys & maybe girls if there are any on here!!

Is the smith machine the equipment where there's a barbell on like runners?? If so, I'm doing squats on that thing as there's no squat rack at my gym & I'm worried having read some things about them that I might be heading towards injury using it!! Will continuing doing squats on that thing damage me & if so, is there alternitive excercise I could do instead of sqats at my gym?? I'm thinking leg press or leg curls??

Hi Skelator,

I don't recommend squats on a smith machine, totally inflexible and an unnatural line of movement in my opinion, plus, like any squat without a rack it could be difficult to rack the weight if you get in trouble.

Has your gym got a trap bar? If so you can use this and do squats. Otherwise i would suggest dumbell squats, although sometimes it is difficult to get enough weight.

The alternative is to do leg press, but if you do this then i would defo recommend adding lunges into your routine as these are a great exercise also.

Of course youcould always find a better gym [:D]

Hope that helps
Oz

Not sure what a trap bar is mate but no I don't think they have 1 anyway!! I doubt I'll be able to do the dumbbell squats either as I won't be able to get the weight I need up onto my shoulders!! I'll do leg press with lunges instead of squats for the time being. Should I do both the exercises at 5x5 like I was with the squats??

perhaps your right about finding a new gym! I love doin squats!! Even though climbing stairs for the next 2 days after looks like I've been bum raped! lol

A decent dumbell variation is to lift them from the ground by your sides, no strain on the back as in deadlifts but all the weight is lifted by the thrust of the legs if you keep your arms straight. That way its easy to get good weight if your gym provides dumbells heavy enough (mine has pairs up to 60kg)

I do smith squats (as i have no toher choice) and have been doing them for a while now, no problems [:)], smith squat is a king exercise in BB, id rather do that than leg extensions and thats what i do.
