Hi guys, well my other half has been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries. To cut along story short, no matter how much she cuts down she will find it near impossible to shift weight. She has been to see her doctor who has said that this is having an effect on her pancreas. In effect she is slowly heading to Type 2 diabeties and has suggested giving her some kind of carb blocker tabs to help shift the weight. But after consoultation it was decided against as this medication can hasten the diabities and also has a slight chance of making her infertile.. The doc has suggested for her to try an atkins type diet to help her shift the weight as it will help her pancreas out apparently also.. So please any thoughts or dietry advice for her would be a fantastic help. I am getting her to excercise more and take her hill walking alot too. but i really need to help her with this diet.. Many thanks in advance guys n gals ;)

She sounds like she is classic Syndrome X - good advice from Nige below. Have they also tested blood cholesterol? Did they measure thyroid function? quote:

Not bad advice, ketogenic diets can be effective in syndrome X. However, I'd still be tempted to push for standard low GI, hypocalorie diet first and see how she gets on quote:

(I'm moving this to the weight loss forum as it's more suited there)

well basically she never really used to eat breakfast only occasionally. She has started going along the route of minimal carbs and lots of red meats and fish as suggested by her gp (as of today as results were only yesterday). She hasnt been given a plan as to what she cant or cant eat as yet, thats why i thought you guys could help put. As exercise, she finds it difficult to do much as one of the errects she is suffering is severe tirdness. We have started lots of hill walking etc, nothing too ott as yet. (going to invest in a cross trainer for her ) She has had all the bloods done and chloresterol and thyroids etc and all came back ok. Apart from they said that she will have type 2 diabieties in the near future. thanks so much for the info so far guys :) Really appreciate it

Well this morning she had Tinned tomatoes on some granary bread Then for lunch she had some steak with salad And for her tea she had an omelete. We are both a little confused as to what she is ment to and not ment to eat at the moment. Her sleep patterns are that she usually goes to bed around midnight (but sometimes around 9 ish) then wakes around 7 - 7.30 am When she does awake she feels very drained and very tired ( feels the same if had 4 s or 8 hrs sleep no difference between both really) and after the girls have left for school she could quite easily go back to bed for a few hours. She starts getting tired around 4 pm most days. Is there a website online that i could get some guidelines as to what she needs to eat and to avoid? cheers again

Personally I feel this is better as she will be including small portions of low GI carb foods. If she starts more exercise then we can target the carbs more
