Just reading last night the story about the McGuckin family whos kids where immediatly taken into child care in Portugal, after having been reported as found drunk and unconcious and unable to get up to help their kids....

...when in fact, they came back from eating out, sober only after having a couple of drink, the wife took serious sickness and had to be rush to hospital, but not before making sure the manager of the hotel would take care of the kids.

Every single news team seemd to report the one story, yet I think some basic investigating by the reporters could have found the real story very very easily.....

Would you sue them for making such statements?

A lot of the time the press will turn ordinary events into shocking stories to sell papers etc

This really hits home when you have a little existing knowledge on an issue , then , when you read about it it the paper , the reported version bares little resembalance to the events you KNOW to be true - once this has happened it give you a scope of how sensationalised the "news" really is , and you find you apply a healthy dose of sceptism to whatever you hear from then on !

Like the Gareth Gates creatine steroid shakes LOL

I hardly watch the news or read the papers, very rarely IMO will get the full story. They are out to make money, and IMO sometimes pursuade peoples opinions on matters! Powerful tool - alot of people believe 110% what they read and watch

I wouldn't say made up, just overly exaggerated and slightly miss leading.

one word
propaganda

some examples of things that fall into this category (off the top of my head)

iraq having nucleur weapons
bird flu
mad cow disease

i was genuinley in fear of dying from the above, particularly bird flu and alas noithing happened

good news doesnt sell papers

isn't that guy Robert Murat who was suspected in the Madeline Mcann thing suing 11 different papers for libel?

one thing I notice they do now is report a real shock story then qualify it with "if true this will be devestating for xxxxxxx" which isn't fair really

They also hang on to some things ( normally sex related stuff )just in case there`s a slow week, the Paul Jewell one being a typical example.

if the government is trying to propose new ways to tax you look at the media for hyped stories...
carbon footprint is a good one right now

same with laws, what better way to impose new terror laws than to come out with stuff like 'we dont know who by, we dont know when, we dont know where...but something awful is about to happen'

Disgustingly made up, especially when there's real news happening out there. When you've been near to a story and then you read the papers, sometimes you wonder if they're talking about the same issues at all. Reporters have no incentive to get facts, and no incentive to report anything useful, just whatever they can make sound shocking
