schiek belts. now with DL form videos, please help. - 08 May 2008 11:29
saw my osteo today due to lower back pain after moving toward a more powerfliting based routine this year, so basically squatting and deadlifitng every week and upping my numbers greatly. basically had some compression between thoracic joints (even though my pain was lumbar) which he loosened up and there was one that wouldnt pop (this one was lumbar) so i'll get that one done next week, feel loads better already. he reckons i may have also slightly strained my erectors too. he says it will just take time for my body to get used to the increased load. so will rest this week.

i think my form is pretty good but am thinking of investing in a belt for singles, doubles and triple attempts, i have tried an inzer and find this really uncomfortable (too much so to wear!), along with some other heavy duty leather belts. does anyone have any experience with the schiek neoprene belts? they do a 4 3/4" and a 6", i assume i;d go for the 6".

only prob i could idetnitfy with form is i think i sometimes pull from to far out, basically not keeping the bar close enough to my shins. will try and get a video soon.

1) hard belts break in, 2) they are meant to be like that and 3) you'll never see a Scheik on the platform.

By the sounds of it you are simply not resting and recovering enough. A belt will not help with this.

Ok roots with regards belts a think if ya go neoprene ocelot (the top one) a little more supportive than schiek in my opinion, with regards a proper belt was the inzer 10 or 13 mil, 10's are usually ok, if uk maybe look at zuluglove or maximuscle or theres them huge neoprenes the strongmen use ask mobster a think he posted a thread a wk or so ago.

nice one guys, i tried the inzer at the gym again today big fcuking thing lol!! helped me out on my heavy 2 reps as felt very week today. i did video two sets of triples and i'll upload now so some we can critique my form, i know however that i didnt feel as powerful as normal at all as i usually never train as late as i did today.

also i didnt wear the inzer for these lighter lifts. jus a regular leather thing.

these were supposed to be speed deadlifts! i have been following the coan-phillipi deadlift progra,m but the last two weeks hae been aweful after it had been going quite well.

am trying to reach 220 from a starting point of 195 1RM today i could barely pull 190kg! and i'm supposed to have progressed

Another indication of over training.

No idea. No routine is perfect. But from your posts you listed at least 2 or 3 indicators of over training.

Ditto! 195-220 is a big big difference in deadlift performance! You need to aim for 200 before you aim for 210, before you aim for 220!

With the Coan routine you should only be finding the heavy doubles really tough towards the end of the program and the speed work should always be no probs. It's a good routine with very sound general principles, but that dosn't mean it is perfect for everyone.

Regarding the vids: hips too high (slightly lower on rep 2 of one of the vids, which was the best rep by far), lower back rounding, weight on toes. Work on ham and glute flexibility and strength and on core strength (how hard do you work your abs?) Learn to engage glutes and lock core before initiating the pull. Keeping your head up might be exacerbating the problem. Try looking at a point c. 10 ft away from you, and don't pull in front of a mirror (if, indeed, you are there).

All comments on overtraining etc. above are also relevant and valid.

excellent doc D, thanks a lot. i'm going to give the DL's a week or two rest then i will put some more vids up, hopefully with much improved form.

correct i am in front of a mirror. i do work my abs reasonably hard, i do weighted cable curls (kneeling), leg raises and cable wood chops (for obliques) once a week (spread through the week)

regards working on ham and glute flexibility, i do do some stretching of these groups each day after low intensity cardio in the mornings i will further this and aim to develop flexibility.
i also do squat and SLDL to strengthen respective groups.
