Konnor -> problems with whey (May 8 2008 12:02:18)

I have posted something similar to this quite recently but I think I've narrowed it down to the problem
originating from the whey

I'm attempting to take some reflex whey early in the morning with some wholemeal bread or oats. I'm taking 30g's
worth with water. On the way to the office in the morning and throughout the morning i feel ever so slightly
lightheaded. When I don't take whey and follow a normal diet plan I don't get this problem. I have also had blood
tests recently to test for diabeties, glandular fever and an overactive thyroid. They all came out negative.

Could anybody hazard a guess as to what in the whey might be causing this feeling? Could it just be my body
adapting to an earlier eating time? (I previously woke up at 7 and ate breakfast around 9 and am now eating at 7.30). Shoud I just stick with
it for a few days?

It's darn frustrating. I'm wondering If I'm sensitive to some sort of additive that goes in the shake as No
combination of carbs with the shake seems to help.

Thanks in advance,

The only thing that I can think of is that the whey is causing an insulin spike which is lowering your blood glucose. Have you tried taking the whey in milk as casein should slow down absorption of the whey? Or how about adding a 60cc scoop of powdered linseeds to your whey & water? If all else fails, try a different protein source e.g. eggs.

I think Nigeepoo might be right about the blood sugar crash.

Reducing the protein quantity or switching to a casein might be better. I wouldn't try milk as this tends to create its own insulin spike, and for some reason fat has no impact on this. [:@]

Yes but the absorption of milk is rather slow due to its casein and lactose content so insulin spike is very short lived once the whey fraction is absorbed IMO

Thanks for the info.

When you mention 'switching to a casein' is this in reference to foods or to a different type of protein shake?

casein is the other protein found in milk mate, it forms a gel in the gut and it very slow digesting. Its also found in hard cheese, cottage cheese, quark and yogurts as well as milk itself

ta,

I'll give it a few days before I accept I may have to ditch the whey.

Whats the next best thing that can be drunk during times when whey is usually effective?

theiopener -> RE: problems with whey (May 8 2008 18:53:09)

post up your full diet mate, it may be something else that causing it, ill have a look for you [:)]

Konnor -> RE: problems with whey (May 8 2008 19:06:01)

A typical day would be.....

7.00 - whey (30g) with water on wakeup

7.30 - 4 eggs and 4 wholemeal slices of bread (eggy bread), fried with olive oil and small smoothie

10.30 - Chicken and salad sandwich and selection of nuts (unsalted)

1.30 - white pasta with tuna and sweetcorn and an apple/banana

4.30 - brown rice with chicken breasts and vegetables

6.30 - WORKOUT

7.30 - serving of Progain

8.30 - Large jacket potato with salmon, mayonnaise and salad

11.30 - Cold chicken breast with olives

Move the whey to your PWO and include it with your serving of progain.

also change the white pasta for wholegrain
